Mangalore, April 3: The 73-paisa hike in power tariff proposed by the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) met with strong opposition from consumer groups at the public hearing here on Tuesday. The decision on the tariff will be announced by the month-end.

Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) Chairman Srinivasa Murthy speaks at the KREC public hearing held at Deputy Commissioners office in Mangalore on Tuesday. DH?PhotoAt a hearing of Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) held at Deputy Commissioners office on Tuesday, Bharatiya Kisan Sangha General Secretary Satyanarayana Udupa said that Mescom is not taking any initiatives to control costs.

The average purchase cost of one unit of power is Rs 2.47. However, after adding other costs it shoots to Rs five. “Consumers are made target in case of cost increase but no work is done to decrease the other additional costs,” he said.

He said that Mescom is purchasing power from private companies by paying more than Rs 17 per unit instead of using alternative means. This power was allocated to Bescom. Hence, Bescom owes Mescom Rs 168 crores and the money is yet to be recovered, he said.

Speaking on behalf of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry S S Kamath discussed on the issues industries will face with increase in power tariff. “It is incorrect to go ahead with the tariff hike without showing the audited balance sheets. Mescom has not given details on subsidy granted by the government,” he said and complained that the substation which was supposed to come up at Baikampaddy has not yet come.

District Small Scale Industries President B A Nazeer demanded increase in the subsidy given to use solar power.

Teerthahalli Irrigation Pumpset Users' Association President Narasimha Nayak complained that there is a shortage of 2,000 line men. “The women from the region have applied for the posts but Mescom is not showing any interest in recruiting them,” he said and questioned on the reasons for disparity.

“The strength of executive and assistant executive engineers is more. For 60 subdivisions there are around 80 Assistant executive engineers,” he said and added that there is shortage of linemen and section officers in Mescom.

Karavali Ice Plant and Cold Storage Association President Ashok Kumar requested to consider the ice plant and storing industries as a separte category and give concession.

“Last year around four crore units of power was used but this year only three crore units are used. This is because several industries have shut down. We cannot compete with Kerala and Goa with the price hike,” he said.

In order to cater the consumer requirements, the Mescom has to buy energy from the generators, maintain its distribution system to its optimum level and also have a reliable consumer oriented approach, said Mescom Managing Director Vijay Narasimha.

Increase in power purchase cost, increase in operation and maintenance expenses on account of inflation and increase in interest and finance charges is directly attributable for the increase in average cost of supply, he said.

Mescom has requested the Commission to consider restoration of the cross subsidy compensation and also allow wheeling charges in cash and kind for all open access transitions irrespective of whether it pertains to NCE sources on non-NCE sources.

The cross subsidy surcharge is required to sustain the deficit cost in providing power supply to other subsidised categories like agricultural pump sets and others, he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Cab aggregators are once again in news for the wrong reasons after an Ola cab driver misbehaved with a 34-year-old woman passenger and even threatened to kill her when she raised an alarm.

But what followed was worse. The woman, a software engineer, immediately called the Ola emergency number following which they asked her to check if the driver was drunk. She later pressed the emergency button on the Ola app but received a message asking her to dial 100. After the aggregator failed to help her, she said she was lucky to be saved by the public.

Reacting to the incident, an Ola spokesperson said, “We regret the unfortunate incident and have immediately terminated the driver-partner from the platform upon receiving the complaint.”

Shruthi G (name changed), an employee at a software company at Bagmane Tech Park in Mahadevapura, booked an Ola cab after her work in the evening of January 3. She booked pick-up stops at two locations as she had to pick her four-year-old daughter from the day-care centre, which is 2 km away from her house.

However, around 6.22 pm, when the cab reached Malleshpalya near Kids Castle, the driver did not stop the vehicle. He asked her to get down at the last drop location. She told him to stop and tried to open the doors but he locked the doors, insisting that she sit in the car. When she resisted, he held her hands and abused her; he even threatened to kill her if she raised an alarm.

The victim said she pressed the emergency button on the app twice but only got a message advising her to call the police.

When she called the Ola emergency number, the person at the other end asked about her condition and to check whether the driver was drunk. They called back after one-and-a-half hours when she was filing a complaint at the police station.

“Ola did not make any efforts to reach out to the police or do anything to track my location and help me in that situation,” she said.

The victim called 100 and the staffer at the control room asked her which area she was in. Since she was familiar with the area, Shruthi was able to give her location.

“First they told me that the area comes under Baiyappanahalli. Later, they said it comes under HAL. Finally, they figured out the location. It took 20 minutes for the police to reach the spot,” she said.

What saved Shruti was her sheer instinct and luck. Alone in the cab, she started raising an alarm. Luckily, commuters in the other vehicles next to the cab noticed her screaming for help and stopped the driver.

“If this is the kind of security Ola provides its customer, it is very questionable,” she said. “If we have to really call the police during an emergency then why they put out the number and emergency button, it’s a waste of time during that crucial situation. If they directly told us to dial 100 during an emergency, it will save time. Lakhs of commuters take Ola cabs thinking it is safe but they have no mechanism to check their drivers and track their customers in danger.”

Baiyappanahalli police said the accused Bhimashankar Malged was arrested and remanded in judicial custody following the complaint.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Wednesday played down reports about confusion regarding valuation of Second Pre- University and the Secondary School Leaving Certificate exam papers.

"Creating confusion has become a habit. There was confusion before the exam, during the exam and now confusion about the valuation of the exam papers," Kumar told reporters in Ramanagara when asked about the confusion over the valuation of answer sheets.

He had gone there to inspect a few centres where the SSLC or the 10th standard exams are underway.

The minister reminded people not to speak about the abilities of the students with contempt.

"Our students have toiled hard and are enthusiastically appearing for the examination. They are eligible for the marks they will score. So we should not speak about our children with disrespect," Kumar said.

The Education Minister said he had spoken to many leaders including former chief ministers Siddaramaiah and H D Kumaraswamy on conducting the examinations.

"Kumaraswamy had insisted on postponing the examination. I personally spoke to him and apprised him about the steps taken by us. I told him that we will work with more sincerity to ensure the safety of the children," Kumar said.

The SSLC exam was scheduled to take place from March 27 but due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, it was postponed.

While the CBSE and a few other states either decided to give marks based on the students' performance in the previous examinations such as quarterly and half-yearly exams or gave general promotion to the students, Karnataka went ahead to hold the exam.

According to Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board officials, around 8.5 lakh students have enrolled this year for the SSLC examination.

The exams are being held at 2,879 exam centres across the state.

Prior to the SSLC examination, the last exam of the Second PUC was also conducted on June 18, which was also put on hold due to the lockdown.
