Karkala, April 7: The former Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde has urged the government to compulsorily provide to provide basic amenities such as health and education to people from rural areas.
He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Nitte-Gajria Speciality Hospital here on Friday.
Mr. Hegde said that in a democratic system, it was the responsibility of the government to provide health and education to people. But for various reasons, the government had not been able to provide these facilities, he said.
Udupi and Dakshina Kannada were known for their emphasis on education and healthcare. The proposed speciality hospital would benefit not just the people of Karkala but also surrounding villages, he said.
While working as Lokayukta of the State, he had come across instances, where institutions which were supposed to provide public services were not discharging their duties and were involved in money making.
The Nitte Education Trust, Gajria Family Trust, and the Venkataramana Temple Trust had come together to set up the speciality hospital. This was a good development, Mr. Hegde said.
Chancellor of Nitte University N. Vinaya Hegde said that the proposed hospital would further develop into a super speciality hospital. Work on the building of the hospital would be completed in 18 months, he said.
It would have a state-of-the-art casualty ward with six beds, which could be increased to 10. It would also have a separate paediatric casualty ward, a separate Intensive Cardiac Care Unit, and a state-of-the-art lab. Provisions would be made to provide MRI and CT scan facilities at the hospital in the future, Mr. Hegde said.
Managing trustee of Nitte-Gajria Trust Vishal Hegde welcomed the gathering.
