Mangalore, April 9: The current education system has been designed to create readymade products from colleges and universities for Multi-National Companies and suppress student activism said Anis Ahmed, Chairman, National Advisory Board, Campus Front of India (CFI).

Speaking at the National Delegates Conference of CFI in Mangalore on Monday, Mr. Ahmed said that post-1991 after globalization, liberalization and privatization gained entry in India, the education system was tweaked in such a way that getting a good job in a reputed company was made the sole goal of study. “Today, in India, you are told that if you want to have a good white collar job, you have to refrain from activism. Students today are not interested in opting for Arts subjects. Even the syllabus that we have for Sociology revolves around business. If this trend continues, there would be intellectual bankruptcy in the future”, Mr. Ahmed opined.

Stating that the semester system was introduced to keep students busy with exams all the time as a tool to provide no scope for student activism, Mr. Ahmed said that a strong student movement was necessary to bring about a social change in India. “Congress' student movement was very active during the freedom struggle but once Congress came to power after overthrowing the British Raj, it died down. The Jayaprakash Narayan movement is another example. People like Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav are products of the student movement that fought against Indira Gandhi's Emergency”, he said.

Lamenting that although there is no shortage of student organisations in the country, Mr. Ahmed said that political affiliations have been acting as a hurdle as far as social change is concerned. “The SFI in Kerala is active since Congress is in power. When the Communist government was ruling, they were in silent mode. All student organisations talk about putting an end to corruption but none of them speak out when leaders of their political parties are in question concerning corruption issues. The ABVP held an anti-terrorism campaign. It was a big joke since a Pragya Singh Thakur who was part of the organization is herself a terrorist”, Mr. Ahmed said.

Abdur Rauf, National General Secretary, Campus Front of India, in his introductory remarks said that social injustice is widespread in India today. “In Manipur, using the AFSPA rule, security forces are raping women in the name of special powers. Hundreds die of starvation in the country. Being impartial is being hypocritical. We are for the marginalized and the weak”, Mr. Rauf said.

Muhammad Shakeer, National Vice President, CFI, welcomed. Anis-uz-Zaman, National President, CFI, Muhammad Thufail, Karnataka State President, CFI, Muhammad Elyas Thumbe, Karnataka State President, Popular Front of India, and Abdul Majid Kodlipet, Karnataka State President, Social Democratic Party of India were also present.

New Delhi, April 5: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer a "credible scientific and rational" explanation for his candle-lighting call and said he is giving "meaningless tasks" to an already exhausted population.

The JD(S) leader questioned if the Prime Minister asked the nation to observe a candle-light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP.

"Has the PM slyly asked the nation to observe a candle light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP? April 6 being its foundation day, what else can explain the choice of date & time for this event? I challenge the PM to offer a credible scientific and rational explanation," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The government is yet to provide PPEs for doctors and make test kits affordable for the common man. Without telling the nation what concrete steps are being taken to combat COVID-19 menace, the prime minister is giving meaningless tasks to an already exhausted population," he tweeted.

"It is shameful to convert the national crisis into an event of self aggrandizement & it is beyond shameful to push the hidden agenda of his party in the face of global calamity. May sense prevail upon the PM," the JDS leader said in another tweet.

Amid a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Prime Minister Modi on Friday appealed to countrymen to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 pm to fight the darkness spread by the pandemic. He asked the people to turn off all the lights in their homes and stand at doors or balconies and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes on April 5.

Last month, PM Modi had asked the people to come out in their balconies and clap and beat utensils to show appreciation for doctors, nurses and others helping fight coronavirus on 'Janata Curfew'.

Nanded, May 24: In a sensational incident, a Lingayat seer from Karnataka was found murdered in his mutt in the Nanded district of Marathwada region of Maharashtra on Sunday.

The seer, who was strangled to death, has been identified as Shivacharya Nirvanarudra Pashupatinath Maharaj, the founder-spiritual head of Nirvanji Pashupatinath Mutt.

Addressing media persons, Nanded Superintendent of Police Vijaykumar Magar, the prime suspect, Sainath Langote first killed his accomplice Bhagwan Shinde and then went to the ashram late on Saturday.

He entered Shivaharya Maharaj's bedroom where he was resting and threw chilli powder in his eyes, blinding him.

Then he quickly grabbed cash of Rs 69,000, his laptop and other valuables in the bedroom worth approximately Rs.1.50 lakh, besides the seer's car keys.

As Shivacharya Maharaj attempted to grapple with him, Langote pinned him down and strangled him, then dragged his body to the sadhu's car parked outside and dumped it into the boot.

"He started the car and sped off towards the road outside, but the car crashed into the main gate of the ashram creating a noise, alerting the other sevaks sleeping inside the ashram," Magar said.

Around 8-10 other ashram sevaks rushed outside to check the ruckus and when they saw their seer's belongings and his body in the car trunck, they attempted to stop Langote, but he gave them the slip.

A short distance away, Langote managed to steal a motorbike and sped off into the darkness and hours later, the police found the body of his accomplice Shinde from a nearby school premises, Magar said.

In view of the sensitivity of the incident, Magar said around five crack teams were formed which fanned out into the district and managed to catch Langote this afternoon.

"The prima facie motive for the seer's murder was clearly robbery and the second killing could be due to rivalry or some differences among them. The absconder suspect has been caught by a police team. We will interrogate him and get further details of the crime," Magar said.

Nanded Congress strongman and PWD Minister Ashok Chavan appealed that the murder should not be politicized, since the police investigations are underway and the autopsy report is awaited.

He said the deceased sadhu belonged to the Lingayat caste, and both Shinde and Langote who belonged to the same community were his followers.

Shivacharya Maharaj had come to Nanded over a decade ago and set up the ashram which he ran along with a band of followers.
