Kalkura conferred with 'best social worker' award

Mangalore, April 10: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura was conferred with 'best social worker' award at the 29th national Kannada conference recently organized by New Delhi based 'Dehali Kannadiga' magazine.

Prof B Hanumaiah, the Vice Chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Universit, presided over the conference held at Delhi Karnataka Sangha Auditorium.

Prof Geetha Bali, Vice Chancellor, Karnataka State Women's University, Bijapur, was the inaugurator.

Seminars on Kannada language, literature and culture, a poets' meet and various cultural events were held at the conference, in which hundreds of delegates from across the country took part.

Prof S Indumathi, Vice Chancellor of Davangere University, K Vageesh, Deputy Director, Directorate General, All India Radio, New Delhi, K R Kamath, Managing Director, Panjab National Bank, Ba Samaga, Convener of the event were present among others.

Udupi, Jun 20: The wife and daughter of a 54-year-old man who succumbed to Covid-19, tested positive for the virus on Saturday.

Sources said that the family returned to Udupi on June 18 and the man died the same day while his wife and daughter tested positive today.

The man and his family had arrived at their house in Thekkatte on Thursday, June 18 afternoon. Later in the day, the man died. He was suffering from jaundice and had arrived from Mumbai in the state of illness.

Mangaluru, Jan 7: Kasturba Medical College Mangaluru, a constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), in association with Pai Family Endowment (in memory of Shri Suhas Gopal Pai) as its social initiative opens a newborn hearing assessment centre at Govt Lady Goshen Hospital on Tuesday.

Dr M Venkatraya Prabhu, Dean of KMC Mangaluru addressing the media persons said that the project is made possible by the generous philanthropic contribution of Mrs Anuradha (Shanthi)Gopal Pai and will be inaugurated by her in Presence of Dr H Vinod Bhat, Vice-Chancellor of MAHE.

Dr Deepak Madi, Deputy Medical Superintendent KMC Hospital Attavar explained that the facility will be managed by the departments from Audiology, ENT and Paediatrics of Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru. The Centre aims to screen all the babies born in the hospital for hearing loss.

This is the maiden initiative of the MAHE-Pai Family endowment which has been set up to find solutions for the numerous challenges faced by the hearing handicapped in & around Dakshina Kannada district.

Mysuru, Feb 23: A Quarantine station for rescued wild animals for rehabilitation will soon come up at Chamundi Animal Conservation, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at Koorgalli, an independent facility developed by the Mysuru Zoo on the outskirts of the City of Palaces and it complies with the recommended quarantine procedures followed globally by Zoological gardens.

The work on the construction was expected to start soon as the tender process had been under progress.

The Zoo was using its own funds to develop the facility for multiple animal species and to ensure that no infections from the wild animals were spread to the healthy animals already in captivity since many years.
