Attack on newspaper office: Court acquits eight PFI activists

court_copy_copyMangalore, April 11: Eight activists of Popular Front of India have been acquitted of the charges of ransacking the office of a two prominent newspapers in the city in the year 2010.

The third Additional District and Sessions Court exonerated all the eight accused from the case for lack of evidence.

It can be recalled that a group of masked miscreants had stormed into the office of 'Kannada Prabha' and 'The New Indian Express' in the city on March 2, 2010, and damaged the furniture. They also caused fire inside the office using a petrol bomb.

The newspaper had termed the attack as 'fanatic retaliation' for a translated article of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen titled 'Pardah Hai Pardah' published by Kannada Prabha a few days prior to the incident. The blasphemous article, had led to violence in Shimoga, Hassan and some other parts of Karnataka, leaving two people dead, injuring many, besides causing damage to property running into millions of rupees.

Based on a complaint filed by the newspaper, sleuths attached to Mangalore North Police Station had arrested eight persons identified as Akbar, Farooq, Mansoor, Sameer, Ubaidullah, Kethil Iqbal alias Mohammed Iqbal, Saifullah and Anwar Sadaath.

In the charge sheet submitted to the court, police had called all the accused as PFI activists.

After a prolonged hearing Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Majagi Nijagunappa pronounced his verdict on Tuesday evening, acquitting all the eight accused.

Advocate Purushotham Poojary argued on behalf of the accused in the court.

Mangaluru, Feb 6: In a case of suspected political rivalry, a 28-year-old BJP activist was brutally assaulted by a gang at Munchoor here, police said on Thursday.

Police said that the injured identified as Yashodhar is undergoing treatment at Padmavathi Hospital here.

Four people namely – Diwakar, Dinesh Shetty, Ashwith Kulal and Yashodhara Agaramelu – assaulted Yashodhar and posed him with a death threat. It was reported that the gang had been keeping an eye on Yashodhar’s movements for some time now.

Bengaluru, July 31: Denying irregularities in covid-19 equipment purchase by the Karnataka government, the state unit of the BJP has issued legal notices to Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar demanding that they apologize or face a defamation suit. 

The notices seek a public apology for the allegations levelled against the government on irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 equipment and supplies. 

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress president, have been doggedly pursuing allegations of corruption against the BJP government and have demanded a judicial inquiry. 

BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar said that while the Congress leaders claimed that Rs 4,157 crore was spent during Covid-19, they also allege that the government has not responded to any of the 20 letters written by them. "If the government has not provided any answer to the Opposition, where did they get the figures from," he said.

None of the allegations of corruption is specific and the statements made are factually incorrect. "These statements, without any basis, have been issued calculatedly to lower the image and damage the reputation of the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, representatives of the party and the ministers in the government," the notice issued on behalf of Ravi Kumar read.

Mangaluru, Feb 9: A youth, native of Dakshina Kannada, was kidnapped and later robbed and then abandoned by a group of criminals, after he landed at the Karipur International Airport in Kerala early on Sunday morning.

In a complaint filed with the Kondotty police, the victim identified as Abdul Nazar Shamsad, said he was kidnapped while he was travelling in a shared auto from the airport to Calicut town. The kidnappers took him to an unknown destination where they tortured him.

Shamshad was reportedly subjected to physical assault and was asked to hand over the gold that he carried with him. It is learnt that the kidnappers had mistaken the youth for a gold smuggler and tortured him in order to get hold of the smuggled gold. They also stole his money and documents before abandoning him.
