Hundreds participate in harmony meet

Mangalore, April 11: Religious leaders from the Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities came together on a single platform at a harmony meet organized by Karnataka State Federation of Sunni organization in the city on Wednesday.

The 'Manavatha Samaesha' was organized to publicise the 'Kerala Yatre' of Sunni organisations like SSF, SJU, SYS, SEDC and SMA under the leadership of AP Aboobakar Musliyar, Kanthapuram.

Inaugurating the meet Yenepoya Abdullah Kunhi said that no religion propagates violence. “Man is an intelligent being as he has a meaning and goal in life. That is why we have the human life. A garden must have different flowers in it and in the same way our society is like a garden”, he said.

Vishweshwara Theertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt speaking on the occasion congratulated the organisers for their effort to bring people of different faiths together.

“We must think as to what is special in a human? Man wants to enjoy all the satisfactions in life. But we are superior beings because we can understand God. That is why man was made. Humanity means God's faith. All must be seen with love”, he said.

The Swamiji also said that truth, love and feelings must be given primary importance. “All religions Hindu, Muslim and Christian can be united by faith. Humanity means not causing trouble to fellow humans. Our country must be united and we must start a new chapter in harmony amongst humans. Madhvacharya once during his journey in North India had to cross the river Ganges. He jumped into it and his students also followed him by swimming. On the other side of the river there were many Muslims and they were all surprised when they saw him there, but received him with love. Around 800 years ago this was the harmony between the religions. Mantralaya was donated by a Muslim to the Hindus” he said.

The seer said that no Swamiji has attempted to bring about peace between Hindus and Muslims as much as he has done during the Ayodhya carnage. “If only sages were involved in the Ayodhya issue then we would not have so much trouble, it is because of politicians that disharmony was caused”, he said.

Vicar General Rev Fr Dennis Prabhu in his address said, that people must live as though they are god's children. “Love your neighbours, says god. Only when we do good to others can we understand god. Whichever religion we belong to we must show compassion towards other religions. It brings me great joy to know that an attempt is being made to bring about harmony by organising a rally from here. When we forgive others we can be god's child,” he said.

AP Aboobakar Musliyar, Udupi Quazi Ibrahim Musliyar, Karnataka Minority Commission president Anwar Manippady, Mangalore MLA U T Khader, former minister C M Ibrahim Congress leader Ramanath Rai were present among others.

The harmony meet was followed by a mass porgamme at Nehru Maidna, where Sunni leaders addressed their hundreds of followers.

Dexamethasone is a life-saving coronavirus drug, claim Oxford scientists

University of Oxford researchers have claimed that a cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone can help save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with coronavirus.

Scientists working on the Recovery Trial found the drug could help patients on ventilators and oxygen, but had no effect on those who did not need help breathing.

“Based on these results, one death would be prevented by treatment of around eight ventilated patients or around 25 patients requiring oxygen alone,” researchers said in a statement.

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, tweeted: “This global first exemplifies the power of science.”

“I’m absolutely delighted that today we can announce the first successful clinical trial for a treatment for Covid-19,” Mr Hancock said.

Recovery Trial experts said a randomised group of 2,104 patients was given 6mg of dexamethasone per day for 10 days, while another group of 4,321 were given normal treatment.

Dexamethasone reduced deaths by one-fifth in patients on oxygen feeds and by one-third in those who needed a ventilator to breathe, preliminary results showed.

Mr Hancock added: “This is a huge step forward and it’s because we’ve backed the science.”

Martin Landray, professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, and one of the trial’s chief investigators, said in a statement: “These preliminary results from the Recovery Trial are very clear – dexamethasone reduces the risk of death among patients with severe respiratory complications.

“Covid-19 is a global disease – it is fantastic that the first treatment demonstrated to reduce mortality is one that is instantly available and affordable worldwide.”

Karnataka BJP urges Modi govt to ban PFI, SDPI

Bengaluru, Jan 29: The Karnataka unit of BJP has urged the Centre and the State governments to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), accusing them of harbouring terrorist tendencies.

Addressing a press meet, N Ravi Kumar, state general secretary of the party, alleged that there was a nexus between the Congress, the PFI and the SDPI.

“Recent reports have exposed the links between the PFI and the Congress,” he said, accusing Congress leader Kapil Sibal of receiving huge funds from PFI to defend their cases in the Supreme Court.

He also accused the organisations as the ones responsible for the death of 23 Hindu activists in Karnataka. Such incidents have proven that both SDPI and PFI are dubious organisations, he said.

Unable to get alcohol brother, sister consume hand sanitizer; both die

Hubballi, Apr 20: Dejected over failure to get alcohol for almost one month, a forty-five year old man and his sister died after consuming hand sanitizer in Kalghatgi taluk of Dharwad district on Sunday.

The deceased persons, identified as Basavaraj Venkappa Kuruvinkoppa and Jambavva Kattimani (50) of little hamlet Gambyapur, died at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

The wife of the deceased person has lodged a complaint at Kalghatgi police station stating that her husband had been addicted to alcohol since the last 10-12 years.

Basavaraj and his sister have reportedly consumed hand sanitizer several times since the last 2-3 days, severely deteriorating their health as they felt it is replacement for liquor and has high levels of spirit content.

They were admitted to KIMS only by Sunday early morning after complaining of serious pain in the stomach. The KIMS director Dr Ramalingappa Anthartani said that the deceased appears to have consumed too much sanitizer and the doctors couldn't save their life as they approached the hospital very late.

He also claimed that he is awaiting the postmortem report to know how much quantity of hand sanitizer the deceased had consumed.

"Condition of the patients was very critical when they were admitted to KIMS hospital. It seems that they had drunk too much hand sanitizer for non-availability of liquor. Consumption of hand sanitizer could prove fatal as it has high chemical contents" KIMS director Dr Ramalingappa Anthartani said

The Karnataka government has prohibited the sale of liquor ever since the Centre declared lockdown to control the spread of Coronavirus. This has prompted the alcohol addicts to buy liquor by paying hefty prices in the black market.

But, many poor people in villages have started consuming cheaper hooch and this trade has recently flourished in the rural areas.

Hooch trade has also prompted officials of the excise department to conduct raids in several villages of North Karnataka region. The many theft cases of liquor shops are reported in Karnataka as drunkards have become desperate to get alcohol.

The Karnataka government was planning to allow the sale of liquor after the end of the first phase of lockdown. But, the rising cases of Corona positive cases has prompted it to extend the ban on liquor sale until May 3.
