Byndoor, April 13: More than 25 cows died following consumption of waste materials and outdated medicines that had been disposed off in Ottinene near Byndoor on Thursday.
Several cows had died on Wednesday too. The number has now swelled to more than 50 following the latest deaths.
In spite of efforts from veterinary doctors, the deaths could not be averted.
Speaking to media persons a veterinary officer said that the consumption of dumped waste materials had a poisonous effect on the cows.
“Had we known about it in the beginning, we could have done something to save them. But the situation had gone far beyond. However, efforts to avoid more deaths will be made”, he said.
Meanwhile, residents of Ottinene also faced problems of dealing with foul smell emanating from swine carcasses that were thrown off by truck drivers on the road. On Wednesday, residents and Zilla Panchayat personnel buried more than 10 pigs and 15 cows.
