Left organizations demand Vittala's release

Mangalore, April 14: The Left organisations staged a 24-hour-long hunger strike demanding the release of Vittala Malekudiya, a student of mass communication and journalism in Mangalore University and his father Lingappa Malekudiya, who were arrested on charges of abetting naxals, in front of Belthangady taluk office on Friday.

The protest was organized under the joint auspices of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Adivasi Budakattu Janara Samanvaya Samiti and Dalita Hakkugala Horata Samiti (CPM).

Speaking on the occasion CPM state secretariat board member G C Bayya Reddy said that Vittala and his father were made scapegoats by the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) cops.

“Our party's stand is very clear that the state government should release Vittala and Lingappa, who are innocent. Vittala, who is active member of our party, was never a Naxal supporter,” he said and urged that the duo should be released immediately.

Even though the Forest Rights Act ensures protection of tribals, the government failed in providing basic facilities to tribal families living in Belthangady and other taluks in the state, he said adding that Naxals make use of the situation to build their base in forests.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: A total of 4,764 new COVID-19 cases and 55 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours.

Out of the new cases, 2,050 cases were reported in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The total number of active cases stands at 47,069, said the state Health Department.

Death toll rises to 1,519 in the state.

Shivamogga, May 12: As many as six medical staff members, attached to the Shivamogga district hospital, who were members of the Corona Warriors team, were suspended for raising concerns over inadequate facilities, available to the frontline workers.

According to official sources, among the six, who were suspended by the Hospital Director, included three staff nurses and other supporting staff in the hospital.

The cause for the retaliation with punishment, was following concerns raised by the medical staff over aweful facilities, made available to them by the Hospital authorities.

Bengaluru, Apr 12: Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday appealed to the Central government to announce the rent rebate scheme for the benefit of tenants in the wake of economic activities coming to a grinding halt due to COVID-19 related lockdown.

In a series of tweets, Kumaraswamy said people are facing difficulty in paying rent as usual and hence the rent rebate scheme should be initiated.

"Many countries have already announced rent rebate scheme for tenants during COVID19 emergency. It is surprising that Indian Govt has not announced any such relief even to residential tenants. I urge the PM to immediately come to the rescue of everyone living in rented housing," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

He said a considerable workforce and students in metropolitan cities live in hostels and rented houses.

As all economic activity has come to a grinding halt, it is very difficult for them to pay the rent as usual.

The Prime Minister must announce rent rebate scheme, he added.

Highlighting the plight of the tenants, Kumaraswamy said, "If the landlords insist on rent, the tenants cannot even go searching for new accommodation due to the emergency. Hence the government intervention is essential. The PM must announce a comprehensive national rent rebate scheme for COVID-19 emergency."
