Second round of pulse polio drive begins across coastal districts

Mangalore/Udupi, April 15: The second round of four-day pulse polio drive in twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi commenced districts on Sunday.

As many as 921 pulse polio booths have been set up in Dakshina Kannada district to administer polio drops to children below five years of age till April 18.

Dakshina Kannada District Health Officer O Srirangappa said that this time the focus will be on children of the migrant labourers dwelling in the district. Mangalore city there are 431 kids of migrant labourers, 287 in Mangalore rural and 200 in Bantwal, according to him.

The DHO said that this year they have set a target of administering polio drops to 1.65 lakh children in the district and the department estimates that there are 1,427 children of migrant labourers in the district. A total of 3,788 volunteers have been appointed for the drive who will have 187 supervisors.

He urged the parents of all the children below five years of age to reach to the centres in the beginning itself to get the drops administered to their children. “For the next two days volunteers will visit homes. I request those living in apartments to allow the volunteers to enter the premises and administer drops to eligible children,” the DHO said clarifying that there are no side affects of taking polio drops.

In Udupi

In Udupi district, as many as 87,404 kids below age of five years in the district will be administered with pulse polio drops in the second round pulse polio programme.

District Health Officer Dr Ramachandra Bairy informed that that as many as 637 booths have been set up for the purpose, of which 476 booths have been set up in rural areas. A total of 2,088 volunteers have been deputed this time.

He said that the department was able to achieve 98.82 percent success in the first round of pulse polio campaign and the biggest challenge before the department is to administer polio drops to the kids of migratory workers, who rarely are brought to the polio booths.

“Parents of these kids lack awareness on child health. Volunteers have to go to the makeshift houses of these migratory workers and administer drops to the kids,” he said and informed that the last polio case that was found in undivided Dakshina Kannada district was in the 1995 in Kundapur.

Bengaluru, Jul 15: Karnataka Congress Chief D K Shivakumar on Wednesday urged the Ministers in the state to visit Covid-19 designated hospitals and instil confidence among patients, doctors and medical staff there.

Noting that doctors, nurses and others were doing a great job, Shivakumar said the government has to stand with them and instil confidence in them. Speaking to reporters after visiting Victoria hospital, a major dedicated Covid hospital in the city, he said, "All the Ministers have to go to hospitals and instil confidence in the staff, patients.... they have to remove fear and tell them we will have to live with this (virus), and cannot escape from it."

Shivakumar said he believes that by instilling confidence most part of the diseases can be cured. He lauded doctors, paramedical and other staff working at the Hospital for the sake of patients, putting their own life at risk and appreciated facilities provided there.

During the visit, the state Congress President interacted with patients undergoing treatment for Covid-19, also medical staff and doctors. He said at Victoria hospital patients were allowed to use mobile phones, so that they can speak to family members, which has to an extent instilled confidence among them, and the same has to be replicated across the state.

Not wishing to comment on complaints about the quality of facility and PPE kits provided at the hospital, also alleged misappropriation on part of the government in the purchase of equipment for Covid treatment, Shivakumar said, "....let's see that at Vidhana Soudha (seat of state's legislature)." He said, "this is not the time to talk about corruption and other things, this is not the time for it....instilling confidence among patients, doctors and paramedical staff is important now."

Bengaluru, Aug 2: All the seven Airports in Karnataka have seen poor traffic even after the restoration of domestic flight services post covid-19 lockdown. Interestingly, Mangaluru International Airport, the second biggest in the state, has slipped to third position in number of number of passengers and flights. 

Of all the seven airports in State-- Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Hubballi, Belagavi, Mysuru, Kalaburagi and Vijaynagara (Hosapete)-- it was the Sambra (Belagavi) airport which saw the highest number of passengers and flights after Bengaluru. 

According to Airports Authority of India report released on their website recently, the Sambra airport outperformed the Managluru international airport in June. 

As many 10,224 passengers travelled to or from Belagavi airport in June, whereas Mangaluru airport saw a footfall of only 8,608 passengers including 3,726 international and 4,882 domestic passengers. Belagavi airport handled 391 flights whereas Mangaluru airport handled 190 flights.

Even the Bengaluru international airport saw a decline in the number of passengers and flights in June. Only 3.69 lakh domestic and 10,654 international passengers arrived or departed from Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru in June as against 27.59 lakh total passengers in June 2019. 

Between April-June 2020 the Bengaluru airport saw only 4.54 lakh total passengers (domestic and international) as against 84.11 lakh total passenger during the same period last year. The number of flights to and from Bengaluru also saw a huge dip in June with only 731 international (2,582 in June 2019) and 4290 domestic (16,216 in June 2019) flights.

Though the Mysuru domestic airport handled a higher number of flights compared to last June, the number of passengers either arriving or departing saw a decline. Last year June 4,775 passengers travelled in 96 flights, whereas in June 2020 the airport handled 3,158 passengers and 330 flights.

Hubballi airport saw the least number of passengers or flights among the seven airports in Karnataka in June. It saw only 55 passengers either arriving or departing from the city's airport in 14 flights in the month of June. In the same month last year, Hubballi airport, which was third busiest before the pandemic, had facilitated 45,973 passengers and handled 604 flights.

Since April 2020 to June, the Hubballi airport has handled only 18 flights (as against 1,958 during the same period last year) and 122 passengers (1,50,416 between April-June 2019).

Mysuru, Jan 11: Accusing the Congress and other opposition parties of pursuing “vote bank politics” on the Citizenship (Amendment ) Act (CAA), Kannada littérateur and Saraswathi Samman awardee S L Byrappa accused the party of misleading the people on the issue.

Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Mr Bhyrappa said that Congress was adopting the divide and rule policy of the British, who had created a rift between the Hindus and the Muslims to break their unity during the freedom struggle.
