Perla's collection of short stories released

Mangalore, April 16: “Naanu Mattu Ganesha”, a collection of short stories written by Vasanthkumar Perla, Programme Director, All India Radio, Mangalore, was released by B.A. Viveka Rai, writer and guest professor in the Chair of Indology in Wurzburg University, Germany, here on Sunday.

Prof. Rai said the stories written by Mr. Perla about three decades ago when the author was 19 or 20 years old gave a peep into the society of that time though one may tend to consider them dry. Today's generation could, through the poverty of people depicted in the stories, figure out how their parents have struggled hard to provide education to them. A story was like an old photograph, a frozen moment – in this case giving snapshot of how the writer saw the society in that era.

The stories also showed the feudalism of men on the one hand and contentment of people in spite of poverty all around, he said adding, “the contentment of poverty is no longer to be seen.” He regretted that people these days were after money particularly in the coastal region. He was inclined to thinking that poverty made people broadminded. The characters in the stories bore this out. Richness brought with it a sense of disinterest about others, he observed.

He stated that the author would not have depicted the society like he did in this set of stories were he to write the same stories now.

Both the writer and society would have undergone many layers of change, he pointed out. He appreciated that the author had shunned the shyness about publishing the stories written in young age as is the case with many other writers. Somehow people did not talk about their love and first works of literature.

Writer Satyanarayana Mallipatna said Mr. Perla had kept himself active in literary circles and had effectively tried to spread literature to many homes, particularly when he was serving in Hassan. He always attempted to go to the roots of the words and cultural aspects.

Humourist and mock poet N. Ramanath said Mr. Perla had used some of the rare words in his stories and thereby he had brought them into circulation and enriched the language. He gave the example of the “Kannikombare” which meant master bedroom. One did not know that there was a Kannada word for master bedroom.

The book has been published by Bangalore-based Srinivasa Pusthaka Prakashana, and the function was organised by Bhoomigeetha.

Kochi, Jan 22: Rail passengers from Kerala are a happy lot as the state’s traditional food items such as appam and eggcurry, puttu and kadala curry have found their way back to the revised menu of the Railways in the wake of protests over reports that they were replaced by north indian delicacies.

The popular Kerala dishes were reinstated to the list following social media backlash over the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation’s reported decision to replace the favorite cuisine of Malayalis from its menu with north Indian dishes such as Kachori and Chole Bhature.

Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, who had shot off a letter to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal raising the issue of alleged discrimination against Keralites, got an assurance from the IRCTC officials that popular items, including snacks such as unniyappam and sukhiyan will be served through its outlets in the state.

Eden said the IRCTC officials who visited him at his home on Wednesday morning have presented him with the list of delicacies to be served by its local vendors in Kerala. In his letter to the minister, the MP had stated that dishes which are very important to Malayalis for breakfast such as appam, egg curry, porotta, dosa, steam cake (puttu) were excluded along with snacks such as banana fry (pazham pori), kozhukkatta, unniyappam, neyyappam and sukhiyan.  He had also raised the issue of hike in price of food items.

According to him, price of meals has been increased from RS 35 to 70 and that ofsnacks such as vada from Rs 8 to 15.  While the price of vada has not been reduced, the fare of snack meal like parotta, chappathi, idiyappam, appam and puttu with kadala curry or egg curry will be served at Rs 50.  According to IRCTC, a passenger will have to shell out Rs 20 for unniyappam/sukhiyan/neyyappam, 2 numbers each.  Informing Goyal of the changes in menu, he said Malayalis are discriminated in trains and railway refreshment rooms by the food which is the right of every passenger.

He had sought urgent intervention of the Minister and speedy action in the matter.

Bengaluru, Jun 2:  With easing of COVID-19 lockdown curbs, the Karnataka excise department has accorded permission for fresh brewing or production of beer and to sell it in microbreweries as takeaways.

"Permission is hereby accorded to microbreweries for fresh brewing/production and sale of beer as takeaway in glass, ceramic or stainless steel container (up to 2 litre) till 30-06-2020, or until further orders, whichever is earlier," the Excise Commissioner in a letter dated June 1 to Deputy Excise Commissioners of all districts said.

The opening and closing hours of the microbreweries shall be from 9 am to 9 pm, it said, adding that all other conditions as laid down will remain unaltered.

Earlier, in a letter dated May 12, the Excise Commissioner had "conditionally" granted permission for microbreweries to sell their beer stock as takeaway on experimental basis for the period from May 14 to June 30 or until exhaustion of existing beer stock, whichever is earlier.

It had called for measures like social distancing, cleanliness, usage of masks and sanitizers, among others, and had said, microbreweries situated in containment zones are not allowed to function.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: No positive case of coronavirus has been detected in Dakshina Kannada district as per the latest update released by the district administration on Friday.

Test results of throat swab samples of 16 people with suspected symptoms were received today and all of them were negative.

A total of 38,518 people have been screened for coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada district till date with 72 people being screened today.
