High Court dismisses writ-petition challenging Mayor Gulzar Banu

Mangalore, April 17: Karnataka High Court on Tuesday dismissed a writ petition filed by DK district unit of BJP challenging election of Gulzaar Banu of the Congress as Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation.

In its ruling, the court directed the petitioners, if they so wish, to approach the district and sessions court and file an election petition within two weeks.

It also directed the lower court to dispose of the same within two months, by holding hearings on a daily basis, if needed.


The BJP had approached the High Court challenging the procedure followed by MV Jayanti, the returning officer during the Mangalore Mayoral elections, who had rejected the nomination of BJP's Roopa D Bangera resulting in Congress candidate Gulzar Banu winning the Mayor's post.

Ms. Jayanthi had rejected the nomination of Ms Bangera as she had failed to submit her caste certificate in the right pattern on time. Since the BJP had not fielded a dummy candidate, Ms. Banu was chosen Mayor of Mangalore unopposed.

The BJP had also accused Ms. Jayanthi of deviating from the legal norms and hence challenged her decision in the High Court.

Kochi, Mar 30: Kerala High Court, while hearing a petition filed against Karnataka's decision to block the border with Kerala, on Monday said that no lives should not be lost in the name of fighting coronavirus.

Kerala High Court also said that "the current problem should be resolved amicably. Both the Union government and the Karnataka government should rise to the occasion."
The Central government has informed Kerala High Court that the movement of goods and medical services qualify under essential services, which is permitted despite the lockdown, and added that directions have been issued to give priority to the movement of such goods and services.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has sought a day's time to clarify their stand.

The matter will be taken up for further hearing via video conference tomorrow.
Kerala government has submitted that the action of Karnataka government to close the border is illegal as all the national highways in the country come under the jurisdiction of the National Highway Authority.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan has also approached the Supreme Court seeking directions to open the Karnataka-Kerala border to allow movement of ambulances and other emergency vehicles for the transport of essential items to Kerala.

Manjeshwar, Aug 3: In a horrific incident, a man hacked four of his relatives to death at Bayar near Kaniala Gurukumeri in Manjeshwar taluk of Kasaragod district.

According to police, Udaya (40), a resident of Sudanbala, killed three of his maternal uncles and a maternal aunt who were staying together at a house at around 7:30 p.m. today. 

The deceased have been identified as Sadashiv (54), Vittal (52), Babu (50), and maternal Revati (58).

Locals caught him and handed him over to the police after tying his hands and legs. 

A preliminary investigation revealed that a familial clash led to the gruesome murder. A police team led by Kasargod DSP Balakrishnan are investigating the matter.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Sindhu B Rupesh in an official reminder has ordered milk unions to disburse about 5,000 litres of milk to residents of notified and non-notified slums, construction labourers and migrant labourers and their families in shelters in the district.

A decision regarding the free distribution of milk to such needy families was taken in a meeting by the chief minister on April 1.

The DC has ordered cooperative milk unions in the district to distribute milk to such families from April 4 till April 14.
