Mangalore, April 17: The workers employed on contract basis by Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) have launched in indefinite protest demanding the fulfillment of their various demands.

Dozens of workers under the banner of Mescom Nonpermanent Employees Association, an affiliate of CITU, sat in front of the Mescom head office in the city on Tuesday morning pledging to continue the fight until they get justice.

The demands of the agitators include minimum monthly wage of Rs 10,000, Provident Fund facility, wage slip, employment cards, earned leave facility, health care, and equal remuneration for equal work.

The contract workers of Mescom include operators, security personnel, watchmen, bill collectors, meter readers, computer operators etc.

Speaking on the occasion Adv Shivakumar, President of the Association, said that contract labour system had been abolished by the Contract Labour Regulation and Abolition Act 1970.

However, neither the Central Government nor the State has decided on how to implement the Act.

“It is the American imperialists who dictate terms on the governments,” he alleged.
