Mangalore, April 18: Attempts to bring back dropouts from schools in the district will be made in the days to come, said Dr. K N Vijayprakash, Chief Executive Officer, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.

He was speaking after releasing an educational report at a discussion programme organized by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instructions, DK and 'Prajayatna' at Taluk Panchayat, Mangalore, on Wednesday.

Stating that dropouts in Dakshina Kannada district number 137, Dr. Vijayprakash said that attempts would be made to motivate them and bring them back to the mainstream. “The dropout rate in the district is a lowly 0.05%. One of the reasons for children dropping out of schools is poverty. If a family is self-sufficient, it won't happen. We plan to visit Koraga colonies and urge parents of such children to go back to school and avail residential schooling facilities”, he said.

Dr. Vijayaprakash also said that 858 children in the district have been identified to be suffering from malnutrition.

Lamenting that children today are put under unnecessary pressure to score good marks and get the best possible CET rankings, Dr. Vijayprakash said that a motivational atmosphere is what students need.

“This year, right from bringing about changes in seating arrangement of children, trying to bring the so called 'dull students' to the front benches to implementing confidence building exercises in schools driving away their fears of subjects like English and Mathematics, we have taken measures to improve schooling. Teachers have given extensive coaching to students this time around. We are hopeful that SSLC results this year would be heartening”, he said, adding that by next year Right to Education Act will be implemented in the district and all necessary infrastructure would be in place.

Commenting on the highlights of the report, Dr. N Chandregowda, Lecturer, said that the sex ratio reports of Dakshina Kannada have been alarming wherein there has been a dip in the number of female children. He opined that the lack of Physical Education in many government schools was a cause of concern. On the occasion, he also stressed on the need to maintain better hygiene standards in government schools in terms of introducing soaps and sinks for children and aprons and headgears for kitchen staff, in addition to cleaner toilets.

Davanagere, Jan 9: Residents of SVR colony of Channagiri Taluq here on Thursday built a temple in the memory of a male monkey, who died here 'unexpectedly'.

A group of monkeys entered the SVR colony around three months back. The monkeys have never disturbed anybody in the area and they used to play with children living in the colony.

Locals said that the monkeys are very obedient to them.

Unfortunately, one of the monkeys died suddenly on Wednesday, causing distress among people who were very fond of him.

Showing their love for the deceased monkey, locals performed his final rite according to Hindu tradition.

Later, the residents approached the president of the village Panchayat to allot funds to build a temple in the monkey's memory.

The construction of the temple has already begun in the area at the same place where the monkey's funeral was conducted.

Wayanad, Jul 6: DM Education and Research Foundation (DMERF), headed by Dr Azad Moopen, has come forward to handover DM WIMS Medical College, Nursing and Pharmacy Colleges and its associated institutions in Wayanad to the Kerala Government.

According to Azad Moopen, Managing Trustee, DMERF, the Kerala Government has been deliberating to set up a medical college in the area over the last 7-8 years to address the challenges being faced by the local population due to lack of local availability of advanced healthcare facilities under the government sector.

The handover by DMERF would address the Government's need. DM WIMS is one of the few NABH accredited medical colleges in the country, he said.

The DM WIMS Medical College and its associated institutions were established by the DMERF Trust 10 years ago to help the backward community of the district.

Run in a charitable manner, the medical college has a capacity of 150 seats and has seen two batches of doctors graduate from the institution. With a total built up area of 14 lakh sq feet, it also has a 700-bed super-specialty hospital catering to the local community and helping in training healthcare professionals, a 100-bed specialty hospital, a pharmacy college, and a nursing college.

A new medical college by the government will require substantial investments and minimum of 5 years to become functional. “We think that DM WIMS can cater to the requirement of the government and setting up another medical college might not be required to cater to the existing population,” he said.

Moopen also announced a donation of Rs 250 crore out of the total investment in the institutions to the government to provide treatment to the needy population in the backward, landlocked district and to train good quality doctors from the State.
