Gram Panchayat workers stage demonstration

Mangalore, April 18: Gram panchayat workers from across the district staged a demonstration in front of the office of the zilla panchayat here on Wednesday in support of their demands. The demands included ban on contract system of employment.

The protest was part of the State-wide agitation by the Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Naukarara Sangh affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions.

Addressing the workers, CITU district unit secretary Vasanth Achary said there had been an increase in the number of persons appointed on contract for various posts in gram panchayats. There was a need to fight against contract employment which would lead to harassment of employees. The State government was taking action and modifying Acts favouring the capitalists, he alleged.

Mr. Achary said: “We need to pressure the State government not to take steps that harm employees.”

Activist Vasudev Uchil said that it was because of the fight by CITU the State government had issued orders for creation of a seniority list. Unlike other departments, gram panchayat employees, who have studied till SSLC and put in 10 years of service, would be eligible for the post of secretary in the panchayat without writing any examination. K. Yadav Shetty, president of the sangh, spoke.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Maddur, Feb 7: Two daily wage workers were buried alive after a heap of mud collapsed on them near the Agriculture Department office on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, in Maddur of Mandya district on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

Police said that the deceased, Kashinath (37), and Rajgandh (30), were working at a site of the ongoing Bengaluru-mysuru highway development project.

Bengaluru, May 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa requested his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray to release six TMC water from his state's reservoirs to rivers in Karnataka to meet acute drinking water shortage in North Karnataka.

Yediyurappa pointed out that the North Karnataka districts, namely Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadagiri and Raichur are facing acute shortage of drinking water due to onset of summer during early days of March this year.

"I request you to kindly direct the concerned authorities to release 3 TMC of water from Warna/Koyna reservoirs to Krishna river and 3 TMC of water from Ujjaini reservoir to Bhima river on humanitarian grounds for drinking purpose," Yediyurappa said in his letter.

He reminded Thackeray that even in the past the Maharashtra government had released water from its reservoirs to meet the drinking water needs of both human beings and livestock in drought-affected areas of Karnataka.
