Manual scavenging: MCC files complaint

Mangalore, April 20: Mangalore City Corporation has filed a complaint with the Kadri police following an incident of a person being made to get into a manhole to do scavenging work, last week at Balmatta.

In this regard, the MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar had issued notices to the Executive Engineer and the Assistant Executive Engineer.

“The man has not been asked by the City Corporation to do the work. He must have been hired by some private individuals,” the EE and the AEE had answered the notice.

With this, the Corporation has filed a complaint with the Kadri police seeking action against the ones who had made the man get into the manhole.

Despite these developments, on Thursday morning a person was seen cleaning a sewage sump on Balmatta road.

Mangaluru, Mar 14: Following the avian flu outbreak in neighboring Kerala, authorities at Pilikula Biological Park in Moodushedde, on the outskirts of the city, have taken all precautionary measures to prevent the death of birds in the park.

Park Director H J Jayaprakash Bhandari said that "the behaviour of the birds is being monitored near open water sources on the premises'.

Though no deaths were reported in the Zoo or on lake premises, the staff continue to maintain a strict vigil on open water sources like lakes. He said the Park was being sanitized.

Udupi, Jan 1: A 53-year-old Journalist of a Mangalore-based media house was found dead at his flat in Manipal on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Rohit Raj (53), a resident of Pandeshwar Mangaluru.

According to the Manipal police, on December 31, Rohit Raj had attended a New Year party celebration at Kadiyali, Udupi along with his wife.

Bengaluru, Mar 29: Seven new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka since Saturday 5 pm to 2 pm on Sunday.

The total number of positive cases in the state stands at 83, out of which five have been cured/discharged and three have lost their lives, according to the Karnataka Health Department.

A total of 979 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.
