Mangalore, April 21: Vocational training along with lending of loans will help in ensuring that economic development of members of minority communities is achieved in the true sense, said N Yogish Bhat, MLA.

He was speaking at a loan cheques distribution programme for Christians organized by the Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation Limited (KMDCL), Government of Karnataka, at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat in Mangalore on Saturday.

Stating that many a time the loans provided by the government are not utilized by the beneficiaries, Mr. Bhat said that provision of vocational training can help a great deal in reversing that trend. “Many beneficiaries, owing to lack of vocational training, use the money given by the government for other purposes and reach a stage where they are not able to repay those loans. If proper vocational training is given, then they are more likely to invest the loans in their respective vocations which is the right way to utilize those loans. I have noticed that Christians are good at jasmine production and the Muslims are expert in mechanical activities. Perhaps proper training to the beneficiaries of loans will help them grow”, Mr. Bhat opined.

Stating that merely granting loans and maintaining accounts of the loans provided is not enough, Mr. Bhat suggested that social audit also be maintained so that evaluation as to whether the recipients of the loans have truly benefited or not is made on a regular basis.

U T Khader, MLA, in his address urged the beneficiaries to channelize the loans in the right manner and devise strategies to enable their economic growth. “Even Infosys began with a small investment. Chalk out plans as to how best you can use these loans for good”, he said.

The MLA opined that off the Rs.1lakh crore budget that the state government presents, Rs. 100 crore be set aside for Christian community welfare as against the existing Rs. 50 crore and Rs. 500 crores for overall minorities welfare programmes. Mr. Khader also said that the government must relax laws concerning license for construction and renovation of churches.

N B Aboobakkar, Chairman, Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation Limited (KMDCL), in his introductory remarks said that BJP led state government of Karnataka had done more for the minorities than other governments in the past. Mr. Aboobakkar stressed on the need to provide facilities to beneficiaries directly without any middlemen involvement, adding that he had taken action against such brokers in Chikkaballapur and Raichur districts once it came to his notice. Stating that services have now become online, Mr. Aboobakkar said that the KMDCL under his leadership has earned the numero uno position in the state among all other Corporations in the state and third place in the country.

Franklin Monteiro, member of the Karnataka State Christians' Development Committee, said that the BJP government in Karnataka has provided Rs 370 crores for the development of Christian community. It has also sanctioned an amount of about Rs 6 crore for construction, renovation and repairs of churches belonging to various denominations.

Cheques worth Rs 138.32 lakhs under various schemes were distributed among 825 beneficiaries and self-help groups on the occasion.

Bidar, Mar 4: The Principal District and Sessions Court in Bidar, on Tuesday, granted conditional bail to five functionaries of Shaheen School management — Abdul Qadeer, Allauddin Pasha, Mehtab Sait, Bilal Inamdar and Abdul Khaleq — who moved anticipatory bail in a sedition case slapped against their school recently.

Senior advocate B.T. Venkatesh from Bengaluru argued for the petitioners. Managoli Premavati Mallikarjuna granted bail on certain conditions, including execution of personal bond of ₹2 lakh each.

The sedition case was filed against the Shaheen School management for its children staging a play as part of their annual day celebrations on January 21, in which a character had allegedly delivered a dialogue against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While Nazbunnisa, the mother of the child who had allegedly delivered the dialogue in the play, and Fareeda Begum, the headmistress of the school, were arrested, they were subsequently released on bail last month.

New Delhi, Apr 29: Karnataka is likely to withdraw the case filed against a CRPF commando who was arrested by state police officials for alleged assault on them during COVID-19 lockdown duty in Belgaum, a charge contested by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force.

In a bid to diffuse the ongoing tussle between CRPF and Karnataka police, the official communication sent to CRPF headquarters on Tuesday, with the details of bail granted to CRPF jawan Sunil Sachin Sawant, stated that the issue was discussed with the DGP Karnataka and other senior state authorities with a request to withdraw the case.

According to official communication, Karnataka Director General of Police has assured top CRPF officers that the "case registered against CRPF CoBRA commando is likely to be withdrawn by the state authorities".

The communication also states that "they assured that the criminal case registered against constable of 207 CoBRA BN is likely to be withdrawn by the state authority."

A CRPF CoBRA commando was thrashed and dragged to police station barefoot by police on April 23 for allegedly violating lockdown norms and assaulting/deterring public servant from discharging his duty in Belgavi district of Karnataka. A case was also registered against him.

This is not the first time when the state is showing efforts to solve the matter amicably.

Karnataka culture and tourism minister CT Ravi had also tweeted on April 27 claiming that he had a word with two ministers including state deputy chief minister who 'confirmed that the issue will be resolved amicably'

"Unfortunate that this incident happened with a CRPF Commando and the police. I have spoken with Industries Minister @JagadishShettar and Transport Minister @LaxmanSavadi. Both have confirmed that the issue will be resolved amicably," CT Ravi had tweeted.

CRPF Additional Director General (ADG) Sanjay Arora had also written to DG showing his displeasure over the ill-treatment done by Karnataka police with CRPF jawan and had said that "Keeping in view the gravity of the incident and its impact on the relationship between the two police forces, I am desired by the Director-General CRPF to request you to kindly get the matter inquired and provide justice. We would be thankful if you could inform us of the outcome."

Arora, in his letter, had also said that Karnataka police should have informed the force before registering a case.

The CRPF CbBRA commando was on extended leave and cleaning his motorcycle in front of his house in Examba city when he was allegedly manhandled and ill-treated in front of his family members and paraded to the police station barefoot, where he was kept in chains and handcuff.

The commando was granted bail by a court on Tuesday in the matter.

Sunil Sachin Sawant has been involved in various anti-Naxals operations and is a part of the CRPF elite CoBRA force, which is famous for doing anti-Naxals operations and has eliminated hundreds of Naxals in the past few years.

Thiruvanthapuram, Feb 21: Rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been accused of sexual abuse by another nun. Police sources say that there is at least one more nun who has given a statement of sexual assault against the bishop.

This nun is a witness in the rape case registered against Franco Mulakkal. She is the 14th witness in the case and in her statement, she said that the bishop made sexually-colored and lewd remarks to her over the phone.

As per the nun, they were in communication via phone calls, chat and video calls for a period of two years from 2015 to 2017.

In the statement, the nun said that she kept quiet as she was scared of the bishop.

In her witness statement in September 2018, she said that in 2017, the bishop visited the convent she was in and hugged and kissed her.

Police say that the witness was not ready to file a complaint against the bishop. They had alerted the police in the jurisdiction and when the team met her, she refused to file a complaint. Hence a separate case wasn't registered against Bishop Franco

The first nun of Missionaries of Jesus had accused Franco of raping her multiple times at the Kuruvilangadu convent in Kottayam. The FIR in the case was registered in June 2018.

Then after protests, Franco was arrested on September 21, 2018.

The chargesheet in the case was submitted in April 2019. In the chargesheet, Bishop Franco Mullackal has been charged under various sections of the IPC: 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (2k) (rape on a woman incapable of giving consent), 376 (2n) (causing grievous bodily harm during rape), 376 (c) (a) 377 (unnatural offence) and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation).
