27th Quadrennial Assembly of NCCI from Thursday

Bangalore, April 24: The 27th Quadrennial Assembly of the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) will be held from Thursday, April 26, on the theme 'Gospel in a groaning World'

Bishop Dr. Taranath S. Sagar, President of NCCI, the apex body of the Protestant and Orthodox Churches in the country formally announced this at a press meet on Tuesday. The Assembly will be held at the St. John's Medical College Auditorium, Koramangala.

Dr Sagar said around 500 delegates from across the country as well as outside are expected to participate in the two-day assembly, where a host of issues, including those concerning Dalits, Tribals, children, women, youth, interfaith dialogue, state policies on minority rights etc., will be discussed.

He said the assembly would start with the keynote address of Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tviet, General Secretary of World Council of Churches on April 26 at 9 am. On the same evening, the Methodist Church in India has organized a public reception at the Baldwin Girls School, Richmond Town, where Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj is expected to participate.

He said there will be special focus on several issues, namely, government evolving pro-people attitude while designing development plans; representation to Protestant and Orthodox Churches in decision making bodies of government; passing of the Lok Pal, Dalit and Women Reservation bills without any delay etc.

Dr Sagar said the Assembly will send a memorandum to the central government to repeal and revoke the National Security Act, the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, the Unlawful Activities Act, the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act and the Chattisgarh Special Public Safety Act to free people from exploitation and domination.

He said that NCCI, founded in 1914, is now in the 98th year and has been an icon of unity in the country.

The NCCI comprises 30 Protestant and Orthodox Churches, 17 Regional Christian Councils, 17 All India Christian Organisations, seven related agencies and three autonomous bodies that represent over 14 million Christians in the country. The Council works together with Catholic Bishops Conference in India and the Evangelical Fellowship of India on issues of common interest and of common concerns through National United Christian Forum.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has claimed that around 3 lakh people had gathered at Shah Gardan, Adyar-Kannur in Mangaluru on January 15, even though their expectation was just 1 lakh people.

The protest against CAA, NPR, NRC and police atrocities against minorities was jointly being organised by the various Muslim organisations of twin district under the leadership of Muslim Central Committee.

“We had just expected around 1 lakh people. But the Mangaluru witnessed the largest gathering in its history on Jan 15. Around 3 lakh people had participated in the protest,” Ibrahim Kodichail, vice president of the committee told media persons today.

K S Mohammed Masood, president of the committee, added that the event was a grand success and fretful, besides being peaceful. He wholeheartedly thanked all those who strived hard to make the protest a great success and to those who had taken part in it.

“At least 28 organisations have come together. As a result 3 lakh people assembled. I thank all those organisations,” he said.

He also opined that police too had helped to maintain law and order and cooperated with the protesters at the venue.

SM Rasheed Haji, B M Mumtaz Ali, Syed Ahmed Basha Thangal, Kasim Ahmed H K and Mansoor Ahmed Azad were present at the press meet among others.

Feb 28: The Supreme Court on Friday granted more time to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a counter affidavit on a petition filed by Karnataka BJP leader and mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy seeking permanent relaxation on his bail condition to allow him to visit Karnataka's Bellari and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh.

A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Indira Banerjee listed the matter for further hearing on March 16 after the CBI sought more time to do file the counter affidavit.

Earlier, the apex court had issued a notice to the CBI and sought its response on the plea.

Last year, the Court had allowed Reddy to visit the Ballari district for a period of two weeks to meet his father-in-law, who the petitioner claimed had suffered a stroke and also allowed him to move a bail modification application seeking permanent relaxation of his bail condition.

In January 2015, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Reddy in an illegal mining case involving Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) on the condition that he will not visit any of the mining zones in Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh.

By the time he was granted bail, Reddy had already spent over three years in prison.

Reddy and his brother-in-law BV Srinivas Reddy, who was the Managing Director of OMC, were arrested by the CBI on September 5, 2011.

Manglauru, July 30: There will be no congregational prayer on Eid Al-Adha at the historic Eidgah mosque in Mangluru’s lighthouse hill this year due to covid-19 pandemic. 

The decision to suspend the Eid prayers in Eidgah was taken as per the guidelines issued by the State Board of Auqaf, said Haji Y Abdullah Kunhi, president of Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid.

However, Eid prayer will be held at Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid on July 31 at 7 a.m.

Muslims in coastal Karnataka will be celebrating Eid al-Adha on July 31 whereas Muslims in other parts of Karnataka and India are celebrating the festival on August 1.
