Udupi, April 25: Labourers who lost their huts when a fire broke out at Chitpadi extension in Udupi last Friday, are now helplessly seeking shelter beside the roads and awnings of shops.

The members of Humanitarian Relief Society of Jama'ath-e-Islami Hind, who visited the victims of fire tragedy, have promised to join their hands in rehabilitation work for the victims.

They have urged the government to provide a suitable site to build houses for the helpless labourers, as the place where their huts were located is not fit to build houses.

As part of its relief activity HRS also provided rice, grains, vessels and clothes for the families which lost their huts in the mishap.

When 13 huts gutted in fire, the residents lost all their belongings including a cash amount of over Rs 30,000, seven bicycles and a motorbike.

“We have been living here since nine years. Our children go to school. We have lost our clothes, vessels, household items, records and text books and everything in this fire. You have to help us in some way,” a distressed woman told the members of HRS.

Gangadhar, a labourer, said that all the families, which lost their huts, were spending nights beside the road since one week. “A few people like members of HRS have extended their helping hand and given us mats and rugs. We do not know what can be done in the future. As everything has been burnt in the fire, it would be good if anyone provides us housing facility,” he said.

“We cannot even return to our native which is reeling under drought situation. We cannot get any employment in our native Bagalkote. How many days we can lead a life beside the road?” asked Savithri, another labourer.

“We do not even have utensils to cook. We have virtually lost all our savings and belongings in the fire,” she added.

The labourers have also lost their ID card, documents related to two-wheelers. The names of those who lost their huts are Maruthi, Sathyavva, Yamanappa, Shekhappa, Sangappa, Nagaraj, Durgappa, Yamanappa, Mahanthesh, Parashuram, Sabbalahunasi Ramappa, Siddappa, Siddaramappa.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: The Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwathnarayan on Saturday inspected the country's first modular Intensive Care Unit (ICU) containers.

A notice from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that the new mobile modular container ICUs, which will be used in the fight against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, have been created by Rinac India Limited, known for setting up sanitised operation theatres and clean rooms in hospitals.

On a pilot basis, the Deputy CM, who is also in charge of setting up COVID-care centres, said that 10 modular container ICUs will be deployed at the KC General Hospital in Malleshwaram. Each of the containers will have five beds.

Deputy CM Ashwathnarayan also said, "These mobile ICUs donated by Rinac will be useful, particularly in times of a crisis like COVID 19 or any natural calamity."

"The entry of health officials will be through an airlock, and entry of patients will be through a different door. There will be two doors for patients and can be increased if need. ICUs are fitted with cameras to monitor online from a centralized monitoring station, thereby limiting the exposure of the health personnel," the CMO informed.

The CMO further added, "the advantages of this new system are that the prefabricated modules of 5 can be shifted to any location by trailers and it is easy to deploy multiple containers to create a common facility. They are easy to clean and the airtight functionality ensures that no moisture or heat ingression happens, hence, it is easy to air-condition or ventilate."

Mangaluru, May 19: Officials at the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said that Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada along with Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru have been alerted about possible heavy rains.

Dr GS Srinivasa Reddy, Director, KSNDMC, said, “Coastal districts have already been witnessing heavy downpour since Monday morning. This will continue for another two days depending on the cyclonic movement along the east coast.”

Until last evening, Haleyangadi and Surathkal in Dakshina Kannada district had received 83 mm and 82.5 mm of rainfall, respectively. Several other areas in Udupi also witnessed heavy rainfall of about 60 to 70 mm rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the rain, which intensified on Monday, to a cyclonic circulation over parts of the Arabian Sea (Comorin area) off the coast of Kerala.

The weather department said the sudden convergence of wind over the peninsular region was due to Super Cyclone Amphan, which is set to barrel into the east coast. The IMD issued an Yellow Alert for coastal Karnataka and Malnad, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in the next few days.
