Mangalore, April 27: Residents of Melukoppalu and Athrebail along with the activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, SFI and various other organisations staged a stir outside Deputy Commissioner's office, on Friday, opposing the move of Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) of reclaiming river bank to lay corridor road.

Addressing the protesters DYFI District President Muneer Katipalla said that in the name of development, common man's right to life is being hijacked. Even the ecological system is being disturbed by the Corporates and at this juncture of time the District Administration should come into picture and try to keep the Corporates under control.

“Despite two notices served to the MSEZ by the Environment and Forest Ministry , the Company has not taken it seriously. District Administration too seems to be taking a soft stand on the Company,” he said adding that struggle will continue till the Company takes steps to clear off all the mud dumped in the area.

He hinted that since the local MLA and MP have distanced themselves from the protest, in future stir will be staged outside their residences.

Thinker T R Bhat said that Dakshina Kannada is heading on the way of Mumbai. “In 2005 Mumbai witness massive flood where several houses in Santacruz area were inundated.

It is said that encroachment of the water drains resulted in unprecedented floods,” he said.

DYFI District Secretary Dayananda Shetty said that District Administration is hand in gloves with the MSEZ and the two together are conning the people. “We will not let this happen. The Company will have to remove the mud dumped in the area and till then our protests will be consistent,” he said.Men, women, elderly along with little children took part in the protest seeking district administration to protect them from impending threat of artificial floods.

The protest started at 10.30 am and went on till 1.30 pm. The protesters later handed over a memorandum to the DC but on his absence the letter was handed over to Additional DC Dayananda.

The protesters, apart from demanding clearance of mud dumped on Gurupura river belt, said that the District Administration should come forth to take stock of the situation of the residents living at Melukoppa-Anthrebailu area. They said that the district administration should hold discussion with Company and the residents and strive to solve the problem.

Ramachandra Nakshathri, a saint from Harihwar took part in the protest. Hailing from Udupi, he had taken to sainthood after his marriage that lasted only for a month.

Nakshathri had completed his primary education in Surathkal and later on he moved on to Mumbai with his family. Dejected over failed marriage he decided to renounce the materialistic world and took Sanyas. Since last seven years he has been living in Haridhwar and since then he has been visiting various places in India. With a backpack, this 37-year old Sanyasi speaks Tulu, Kannada, Hindi and Marati fluently.

With lucid palmistry knowledge, he ekes out money for his travel through 'dakshina' for reading palms and predicting future.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu drew flak from his own party the BJP as well as the Congress for allegedly letting hundreds of people throng the Rupangudi Road in Ballari to collect food packets from him.

Visuals showed that the people came in hordes and fell on each other to collect the packets Sriramulu was distributing to the poor and needy as relief measure in the wake of lockdown.

The videos showed the minister standing with his team by the roadside and spreading out tables all along to distribute the food kit to the poor people.

Those in the queue had elderly people too.

A majority of people who rushed to grab the food packets did not bother to protect themselves with a mask.

"Whoever has done he has committed a blunder whether it is Sriramulu in Ballari or Anand Singh in Hospet.

All these elected representatives want to show that they are serviing the people in their constitutuency," said Karnataka BJP spokesperson Go Madhusudana.

Flaying the leaders of all political parties for defying norms, Madhusudana sad this has become fashionable for the leaders to perform 'cheap shows'.

He advised Sriramulu that it should have been done with door-to-door delivery of food packets instead of arranging it at the public place.

Congress spokesperson K E Radhakrishna said a case should be registered for defying regulations.

"I am all appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa who were the first to wake up and do something good for the people.

Now I feel sorry for them.

I wonder why they cannot control their own partymen.

People should file FIR against him (Sriramulu)," Congress spokesperson Prof K E Radhakrishna said

Slamming the alleged VVIP culture in the country, Radhakrishna said when the nation is facing a crisis, lavish marriages and grand birthday parties were organised. In the midst of all this health minister organises a food distribution mela, he added.

Attempts to reach the minister went in vain.

However, speaking to reporters at Ballari, Sriramulu admitted that the cases suddenly shot up in the state because of disregard to social distancing.

"People's support to lockdown is essential.

People have to maintain social distancing, without which we cannot control it," the minister said.

Newsroom, Apr 22: Dozens of Tablighi Jamaat members from across the country who have been successfully recovered and have now tested negative for the novel coronavirus have come forward and donate their plasma for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

The Tablighis from Tamil Nadu were the first to take this decision. According to them, apart from helping the critically ill patients to recover from COVID-19, was to counter the ‘baseless accusations’ that Tablighis were responsible for the spread of the virus following the religious congregation of the sect held at Delhi’s Nizamuddin area last month.

Mohammad Abbas, a thirty-eight year old businessman from Tiruppur was on Sunday discharged from Coimbatore’s ESI hospital. “As soon as I got discharged, I met the district administration officials and the dean of the hospital and told them that they may contact me anytime if they needed me to donate my plasma,” Abbas was quoted as saying by an English daily.

“It has only been one day since I was discharged but I’ve already spoken to others (from the Jamaat) who have recovered and they were all ready to donate,” he added.

Leader's call

Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, a prominent leader of Tablighi Jamaat, who has been booked by the Delhi Police for holding a religious congregation, too has appealed to coronavirus survivors to donate blood plasma for infected people.

In a letter issued on Tuesday, Saad said most of the members who were quarantined did not have any infection and they tested negative for COVID-19.

"Even from amongst the ones who tested positive for the disease, a majority of them have now undergone treatment and are now cured while I and a few others are still under quarantine.

"It is required that such people who are now cured of this disease should donate blood plasma to others who are still fighting the disease and are under treatment," he said.

He also has urged the followers of the organisation to pray at home in the month of Ramadan instead of going to mosques.

Plasma therapy

Convalescent Plasma Therapy is an experimental procedure for COVID-19 patients.

In this therapy, the antibodies of a person who has recovered from the virus are taken and transfused into a sick person (having the virus) to help boost the person’s immune system.

The recovered COVID-19 patient’s blood develops antibodies to battle against COVID-19.

Once the blood of the first patient is infused to the second patient, those antibodies will start fighting against the coronavirus in the second person.

The process for donating plasma is similar to donating blood and takes about an hour.

Several countries around the world including the United Kingdom and the United States have also started plasma therapy trials.

In India, several states like Kerala, Gujarat and Punjab have already started using Plasma Therapy for the corona-infected patients.
