Police accused of ignoring cases of atrocities against SCs and STs

April 30, 2012

Mangalore, April 30: Members of Dalit organisations on Sunday accused Urwa police of not registering cases of atrocities on people from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Participating in a meeting convened by police to address the grievances of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes people, Sadashiva of Urwa Stores alleged that the Urwa police had not been registering cases of assault on Dalits.

“There are about five cases of assault in our SC/ST colony in Boorgudda. But not a single case has been registered with the police. These cases of atrocities do not even reach the police inspector, the circle inspector, or the Assistant Commissioner of Police,” he alleged. Mr. Sadashiva said one such incident occurred when he and S.P. Anand, a Dalit leader, were in the chambers of the Urwa Police Inspector a few days ago. A youth from the SC/ST colony had been assaulted. The persons, who had assaulted, came to the police station and a head constable took an undertaking and sent them away. “No complaint was registered,” Mr. Sadashiva said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) D. Dharmaiah, who chaired the meeting, said he would enquire the Urwa Police Inspector about the incident. Mr. Dharmaiah asked Dalit leaders to bring all such cases of atrocities and assaults to his notice. “It will help us to initiate appropriate action,” he said.

Suspect of murder

Mr. Anand asked the police to expedite investigation into the death of 16-year-old Sanket, an employee of a poultry store in Kulashekara, because of food poisoning. Mr. Anand said family members of Sanket suspect the death to be a murder. Sanket's cousin Dharmesh later told The Hindu that he had spoken with Sanket on the night of March 14. “He was found dead when I came to the store at 5.30 a.m. Blood was oozing out of Sanket's nose. Hence we suspect it to be a murder,” he said.

Mangalore East Police Inspector Venkatesh Prasanna said the death of Sanket had been registered as a case of unnatural death. Mr. Prasanna said there were no injuries on the body to suspect murder. The police were waiting for the report of the Forensic Science Laboratory and then proceed with the investigation.

The Dalit activists raised problems caused by men who pose like transsexuals and ask motorists to pay money near Kottara Chowki. Mr. Anand said these people worked in hotels and extort money late in the night. This group was earlier operating from Nehru Maidan and had now moved to Kottara Chowki. Mr. Sadashiva said there had been instances where chain snatchers had committed offences in the guise of such men.

Mr. Anand said about problems caused to the family of Seshappa, who died under suspicious circumstances in Belthangady recently.

Mr. Anand said the family members were unable to get death certificate in the absence of acknowledgement from Father Muller Hospital about treatment at the hospital.

Mr. Dharmaiah asked the jurisdictional Mangalore East police to give family members the copy of the details of treatment given to Seshappa at the hospital.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The arsonists, who were allegedly hired by the pro-CAA politicians in Delhi to unleash violence against Muslims, did not even spare the residence of Border Security Force personnel Mohammed Anees.

While the jawan, who has spent three years guarding the borders along Jammu and Kashmir, had hoped that his job profile mentioned on the nameplate hung outside their two-storey house would discourage the vandals, he was proved wrong.

The nameplate on house number 76 in Khas Khajuri Gali clearly mentioned it was the property of a security force personnel who protects India’s borders from foreign invasions. Yet, it was burned down on the afternoon of February 25.

First, the ruthless goons set the vehicles parked outside the jawan’s house on fire, then they torched his home. Stones were also pelted at his house amid slogans of “idhar aa Pakistani, tujhe naagarikta dete hai” (Come here Pakistani, get your citizenship).

Apart from Anees, his father Mohammed Moonis, 55, uncle Mohd Ahmed, 59, and 18-year-old cousin Niha Parveen were in the house. Sensing what was about to go down next, they all escaped from the house, and were helped by paramilitary troops.

Charred remains of the house now stand where the house was till three days ago. In the two lanes of Khajuri Khas near Anees’s house, 35 houses were set on fire.

The loss suffered by the BSF soldier’s family was perhaps greater as they had kept all their life’s savings inside: two weddings in the family were to take place in the next three months.

Niha Parveen was to get married in April and Anees himself was to get married the following month. “All the things we collected all our life, jewellery – two gold necklaces, silver jewellery, it is all gone,” the family said.

“We used to buy jewellery on instalments… used to give money every month and collected this jewellery,” they said. Rs 3 lakh in cash for the wedding arrangements also got burnt along with other valuables and all their belongings.

Khajuri Khas is a Hindu-majority area, but Anees’s family says no neighbour of theirs was involved in the attack. “People came from outside.” Instead, their Hindu neighbours were asking the rioters to leave. They requested them to leave and helped douse the vehicles on fire.

Tumakuru, Jan 8: RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat stoked controversy on Wednesday by stating that 'Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is full of traitors'.

He was addressing the media after taking part in a pro-CAA rally organised by National Citizens Forum near the office of the deputy commissioner of the district here.

Bhat said, “JNU is full of traitors. Congress and communist parties have been generating anti-nationals there. But there is no need to close the university down. Modi government will handle it.”

“Nationalism should be infused among the students there through love and trust. They should be made to realize what the truth is,” he said.

He is safe at home and sacrifiers are poor boys who blindly believe and obey him.
