Mangalore, April 29: Reservation in private sector should be a question of life and death for SC/ST communities, said Dr. Udit Raj, National Chairman, All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations.

He was speaking a programme organized to celebrate the 121st birth anniversary of Dr. B R Ambedkar and inauguration of the State Unit Office of the All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations in the city on Sunday.

Stating that the UPA government had initially in its Common Minimum Programme proposed reservation in private sector Mr. Raj said that it ultimately budged to the pressure of corporate houses who did not want quotas to be imposed on them.

“Today, the corporates are controlling the politics of the country. Anil Ambani's name had figured in the 2G scam but he was not jailed while VIPs like A Raja and Kanimozhi were. Similarly Ratan Tata's name had also surfaced in the Radia tapes episode but no action has been taken against him either. The money of the corporates is controlling politics and media today”, he said.

“The corporates said that they will include Dalits in their establishments themselves. They said they will create 100 Dalit entrepreneurs in a year. Considering the population that we have in the entire country that number hardly has any value. But even this has not been done”, Dr. Raj said.

Dr. Raj warned that a silent conspiracy is being executed in the country to 'kill' reservation in the country.

“Earlier the Brahminical forces would hit from the front but now they are doing it in hiding. They are resorting to dilution of reservation in the garb of privatization, liberalization, better services and so on. Outsourcing of jobs has become a menace and upper castes are becoming wealthier. Reservation is being silently killed. The system is being controlled by Brahmins who are not allowing us to participate. Be it the media, film industry, market, trading, land holdings, hotel industry, export and import industry, we are yet to get our share. Whatever little we have achieved is thanks to reservation”, he said.

T S N Murthy, Deputy Chairman, NMPT, expressing his thoughts, said that reservation was a gift from Dr. B R Ambedkar to marginalized people of our country. “Dr. Ambedkar made us sit inside classrooms through reservations, while he had been made to sit out during his schooling days. He made us drink public water and enter temples. Today we have forgotten the value of the pain that he endured. We are not united and it is being exploited by others. There are sinister plans to scuttle reservations and cutting down of reservation is a hidden agenda”, he said.

Mr. Murthy also said that there is a need to reach out to each and every one using social networking technology to air grievances of the SC/ST communities.

Activist and thinker D Mahadevaiah and many other Dalit leaders were present.

Kolkatta, Mar 19: A local leader of BJP has been arrested for organising a cow urine consumption event in Kolkata, claiming that it will protect people from coronavirus or cure those already infected, leading to a civic volunteer falling ill after drinking it.

The police said that 40-year-old Narayan Chatterjee, who had on Monday organised a cow worship programme at a cowshed and distributed cow urine, was arrested following a complaint filed by the victim.

He had vouched for its "miraculous" properties while offering gaumutra to others.

A civic volunteer, who was on duty near the cow shed also consumed gaumutra and fell sick on Tuesday, following which he lodged a complaint with the police against Chatterjee.

Reacting to the arrest, the state BJP leadership criticised the state government.

"Chatterjee had distributed cow urine, but he didn't fool people in consuming it. When he distributed it he clearly said it was cow urine, he didn't force anyone to drink it. It has not been proved whether it is harmful or not.

"So how can just police arrest him without any reason. This is completely undemocratic," state BJP General Secretary Sayantan Basu said.

West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh has said there is no harm in drinking cow urine and he has no qualms in admitting he consumes it.

His party colleague and MP Locket Chatterjee, however, differed, terming it an "unscientific belief" that should be shunned.

The cow urine distribution as a cure for coronavirus had drawn sharp criticism from the doctors.

Bengaluru, Mar 11: Heated verbal exchange between Minister K Sudhakar and former Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar in the assembly over disqualification of 17 MLAs last year, continued to disrupt the proceedings on Wednesday, with both opposition and treasury benches pushing for a privilege motion and demanding action.

Chaotic scenes and adjournments marked the House proceedings, with both sides not ready to budge.

As the House met for the day, around 11 am, senior Minister K S Eshwarappa accusing Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar of using "expletive" during a debate last evening, demanded his apology and that he be kept out of the proceedings.

Sudhakar, against whom expletive was allegedly used by Kumar, said, the words used were unpardonable and he should be heard, as he has given notice.

Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah then demanded that he be allowed to speak first as he had given notice on Tuesday itself.

The Congress leader on his part has accused Sudhakar of breaching Kumar's privilege by allegedly making derogatory remarks against him.

Intervening, Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said he has received breach of privilege notice from both sides and would allow it only after the question hour as per rules.

Though Congress expressed its agreement with the Speaker about letting them raise the matter after question hour, BJP legislators including Ministers said, Ramesh Kumar should be suspended.

Pointing out that Kumar was not inside the House, some ruling party MLAs even called him "escapist" and demanded action against him.

Strongly objecting to it, Siddaramaiah questioned the ruling party's intentions in running the house smoothly.

As this was followed by heated arguments between both sides, the Speaker adjourned the House for 15 minutes.

When the house met after much delay at 12:55 pm, the chaos continued.

As the Speaker allowed Minister Jagadish Shettar to speak, who was requesting permission to raise a point, Siddaramaiah objected to it and said he had given notice first.

He said, "this is not correct, it looks like government doesn't want the House to function, they don't want discussion on the budget, they are purposely blocking the proceedings of the House".

However, some BJP MLAs reacted to this by shouting slogans "shame shame Ramesh Kumar".

As his repeated attempts to conduct the proceedings failed, the Speaker adjourned the House for lunch.

Sudhakar, while speaking during a special discussion on the Constitution on Tuesday evening had made critical remarks against the decision of Kumar, as speaker, to disqualify 17 Congress-JD(S) MLAs under the anti-defection law, including him.

Angered by this Kumar, who opposed discussion on the subject, amid heated argument between BJP and Congress members allegedly uttered the expletive, which aggravated the situation and had resulted in pandemonium in the House last evening.
