Manipal, May 1: Team Manipal Racing (TMR) is all set for the Burlington, Wisconsin off-road competition, SAE BAJA Wisconsin to be held from June 7 to 10, 2012. Their vehicle, “TMR V3”, was formally launched by the Chancellor of Manipal University, Dr Ramdas M Pai at the Health Sciences Library of Manipal University here on Monday. This is the third time that the Manipal Institute of Technology students will be participating in this event, organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), USA. “It is a perfect platform to apply engineering knowledge and skills in a real world environment,” said team leader and captain, Siddharth Singh of 3rd mechanical, at the launch.

“We hope to do far better this time with a lot of improvement in our all terrain vehicle (ATV),” Siddharth said. It was at Wisconsin in 2009 that TMR made its first appearance. On that occasion, the team finished 97th out of 115 overall, and 14th in design. At Rochester in 2010 the team finished 62nd out of 94. Incidentally, TMR had been the best Indian team at both these meets. “Past experiences have helped us tremendously in the present venture to improve the vehicle in every way,” the team leader said.

TMR V3 features various technical advancements over previous designs; being one of India's lightest BAJA car through extensive use of advanced, lightweight materials. Besides, better electronics are being showcased on this year's car by the inclusion of an onboard speedometer, various instrumentation gauges permitting real-time monitoring of various vehicle performance parameters from the pit-crew. The incorporation of a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) has drastically improved turning performance and stability.

The team comprises 36 students divided into six technical and three management departments. The departments include suspension, steering, transmission, chassis, brakes and electronics under technical, while the management team is subdivided into finances, logistics and public relations. David Furtado, also a 3rd Mechanical student, is the manager of the team handling the various business aspects.

Preparations for this year's race began way back in 2010 after the team decided to skip the 2011 event in Illinois, USA. That time was utilised to develop the design and come up with a better vehicle. The final design was completed by mid-2011 and the fabrication began in October 2011. The team channelized more effort, squeezing in hours of work around college schedule to ensure the car's completion by mid-April. The vehicle has been extensively tested and found to be better in many ways than the previous ones. One hundred and fifteen teams from all over the world are expected to participate in this year's competition which will include other teams from India as well.

Some of the main sponsors of the vehicle which cost Rs 11 lakhs are: Sahara India, Polaris Industries, DHFL and Idea Cellular. Dr. Krishnamurty from Mechanical Engineering is the faculty advisor while Dr. Divakar Shetty S, HoD, Mechanical and Dr. B. Rammohan Pai, HoD, Automobile Engineering have lent full support through the duration of the project.

Kalaburagi, Jan 1: Fighting penury and partial blindness in one eye, a 39-year-old part-time Kannada lecturer from Kalaburagi district is set to become a commercial tax officer after cracking the Karnataka Administrative Services.

Ambadas Kamble, from Kotana Hipparaga village in Aland taluk, had to take a three-year gap during his school and college years - one-year break after completing Class VII and two years to clear subjects after he failed in II PU examinations. During those three years, he joined his brothers in masonry work to supplement the family's income.

Sweeping aside all hurdles with grit and determination, Ambadas studied Kannada literature for both undergraduate and postgraduate to land the post of a part-time lecturer in a Kalaburagi college. His father died when he was a child, and mother Chandamma supported her family of six - besides, Ambadas, she has two sons and two daughters - by working in houses in the neighbourhood.

Ambadas said he would like to dedicate his success to his mother, who died in the year 2012. "My mother encouraged me to chase my dream - financial difficulties notwithstanding - and allowed me to spend time in the library when my siblings were busy doing menial jobs to fund my education. I'm grateful to my brothers too," he said.

His two brothers are working as masons in Mumbai, having quit studies midway and deciding to support Ambadas - the first in the family to complete graduation. He did high school at Tadkal village in Aland taluk, and college in Kalaburagi.

The lecturer, who's 40% blind in the right eye, cracked the KAS examinations in his third attempt and stood 706th in the state. He has been selected for first-grade officer's post. Alongside, he's doing PhD in Kannada literature.

When his efforts finally paid off, Ambadas landed four job offers: Hostel warden at Morarji Desai hostel, at an SC/ST hostel, post of a lecturer and the tax officer's post. He picked the fourth to serve the state in right earnest.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered notice to the state government and self-styled godman Swami Nithyananda while hearing a petition seeking cancellation of bail granted to him.

A petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court on Friday seeking cancellation of bail granted to Nithyananda for skipping the trial and fleeing the country.

Justice John Michael Cunha, after hearing the complainant, ordered issuance of notice to the state government and Nithyananda and posted the matter for hearing next week.

The petition, filed by K Lenin, alleged that Nithyananda has been skipping trial and has fled the country on an expired passport.

The plea further said that Nithyananda was making false representations in his "exemption petitions to the trial court as if he is still in India".

Interpol has also issued a 'blue corner notice' to locate the self-styled godman, who is facing trial in a criminal case, on the request of Gujarat Police.

In the video which was uploaded on Sunday evening, Vijayalakshmi said, “This is my last video and I have been in tremendous stress in the last four months because of Seeman and his partymen. I tried my level best to survive all these days because of my mother and sister, but I have been humiliated in the media by Harinadar recently.”

She added, “I would like to tell fans who are watching the video just because I was born in Karnataka, Seeman has tortured me a lot. As a woman, I have put up with it to my highest capabilities. I won’t be able handle the pressure anymore. I am from the Pillai community, the same community LTTE leader Prabhakaran is part of. Prabhakaran is the only reason Seeman is who he is today, but now he has been harassing me on social media continuously. You slut shamed me to make me feel the pain and it is up to me to decide on what to do after facing such insults from you. I request my fans not to let Seeman get away from this case. He should never get anticipatory bail. My death should be a big eye-opener to everyone. I don’t want to be a slave to anybody.”
