More privatisation will increase poverty'

Mangalore, May 2: By encouraging privatization in the country, the government is encouraging poverty said H V Anantha Subba Rao, Secretray of the state unit of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC).

He was speaking at a programme organized as part of the 76th anniversary of Beedi and Tobacco Labour Union in the city on Wednesday.

Citing the recession disaster that America had to confront, Mr. Rao said that greater encouragement to privatization will lead to a similar disaster. “Our economy survives because of public sector. The government wants to make sure that everything is privatized. This will reap bad results and increase poverty in the country”, he said.

The AITUC has always been providing a platform for people to voice their fury against globalization, privatization and liberalization, he said.

Accusing the government of siding with the owners and neglecting the labour class, Mr. Rao said that even though the minimum coolie rules had been introduced way back in 1996, successive governments failed to implement them.

Mr. Rao said that the government must make sure that apart from wages, labourers are provided with other facilities such as ESI, provident fund, education for their children and so on.

B K Krishnappa, Senior CPI leader and former Corporator, presided over the programme.

Mangaluru, Jul 22: On the direction of the Karnataka government, private medical colleges in Dakshina Kannada have reserved 4,000 beds for the treatment of Covid-19 infected patients.

With this, the district will have a total of 4,720 beds for the treatment including that from the government set up.

The district administration has directed the eight private medical colleges to reserve 50 of its beds for treating the infected patients. Accepting the direction of the district administration, the management of medical colleges have submitted details on the beds reserved to the authorities concerned.

Mangaluru, May 27: Karnataka’s twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi today reported 11 and 9 fresh covid-19 cases respectively.

In Dakshina Kannada the covid-19 patients include seven women and four men who had recently come from Maharashtra.

One of the patients is a 3-year-old child. Others are girls aged 11 and 17, women aged 36, 37, 45, 59 and men aged 22, 35, 39 and 46.

All of them have been shifted to covid-19 hospital from different institutional quarantine centres. 

In Udupi too all the nine people – six men, a boy, and two women -  had come from Maharashtra a few days ago.

Bengaluru, Mar 28: Karnataka government on Saturday launched a food helpline number --155214-- for the labourers who have been affected due to lockdown imposed by the central government to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

This came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of the coronavirus, saying that " social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
Similarly, other states including Delhi have started both official and non-official helpline numbers for necessary assistance.
Both the government institutions and social organizations are contributing together in the fight against coronavirus during the lockdown.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), there are 918 confirmed cases of coronavirus cases in the country and 19 fatalities have been reported.
