Residents continue agitation for restoration of Phalguni ecosystem; stage protest before CRZ office

Mangalore, May 4: continuing their agitation for third consecutive day, residents of Melkoppala and Athrebailu residents on Friday carried out demonstration in front of the local office of the Coastal Regulatory Authority demanding action for the alleged violation of Coastal Regulatory Zone regulations by the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ).

The residents are demanding the MSEZ to remove the mud dumped along the Phalguni river near Kuloor and restore the ecosystem.

The residents went to the office of the Assistant Director, the Coastal Regulatory Authority on Friday morning. “We went there to clarify about a letter written by the authority stating that there was not much violation of the CRZ regulations by the MSEZ and they had been permitted to go ahead with the work,” said Dinesh B. Shetty, who is led the resident's group.

The residents are opposing the work being done along the Phalguni river for the proposed road-cum-pipeline corridor connecting the MSEZ and the New Mangalore Port Trust.

The residents raised slogans against the MSEZ and then insisted Assistant Director Mahesh Kumar visit the place of work.

Mr. Kumar obliged to the request and visited the work site along with residents. The residents, who had gathered in a big number near Kulur bridge, said they would not allow the MSEZ to go ahead with the work unless mud dumped along the Phalguni river was removed.

The MSEZ said the pipeline-cum-road corridor development work was done after obtaining environment clearance certificate issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forest on the recommendation of Coastal Regulator Authority.

In a press release, MSEZ Public Relations Officer Ramachandra Bhandarkar said the certificate recognised the construction earth walls and elevated roadway over structures for construction of the corridor. Necessary permissions have been taken from the State Government for strengthening the river bank and for construction of road over bridge. The MSEZ had duly complied with the directions of the CRZ.

Family of deceased covid-19 patient beats up ambulance driver

Bengaluru, Jul 31: An ambulance driver was thrashed by the family members of a 75-year-old COVID-19 patient who passed away on his way to the hospital in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The incident happened after the patient died in the ambulance while waiting in front of the MS Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru.

The driver was dragged out of the ambulance and chased around by a relative.

His clothes were ripped off and harangue were hurled at him. The relative was seen shouting and blaming the driver for the patient's death.

Speaking to news agency, the driver said that he was unable to explain the sequence of the protocol which was to be followed while getting the patient to the treatment ward.

Karnataka is one of the worst-affected states by the coronavirus pandemic. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the state has 67,456 active cases as of Friday.

The state government has been struggling to contain the spread of the disease as it has intermittently imposed and eased lockdown measures, especially in the capital Bengaluru.

With 596 marks Udupi’s Abhijna Rao is II PUC science Karnataka topper; 100% in 5 subject

Udupi, Jul 14: Abhijna Rao, a student of Vidyodaya PU College, Udupi, has emerged state topper in the science stream of II PUC.

Abhijna has secured 596 marks in the II PUC examination-2020, the results of which were announced on Tuesday July 14. She scored a perfect 100 marks in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science (PCMC). In Sanskrit and English she scored 100 and 96 marks respectively.

She had secured second position in the Karnataka SSLC examinations two years ago.

She is daughter of Asha Rao and Vittal Rao, a retired professor. Her sister Raksha Rao has completed Engineering from NITK Suratkal.

“After securing second rank in the state in SSLC, my target was to score more in PUC examinations. My parents and lecturers have supported me in my studies. All my teachers gave me proper guidance. Vidyodaya College also supported me. I was studying on a daily basis. The exams were easy and I had expected to score above 590. I am very happy to score 596," she said.

Bengaluru bike rider hits 300 kmph, lands in police custody after video goes viral

Bengaluru, Jul 21: A man was arrested on Tuesday for riding his high-end bike up to a speed of almost 300 km per hour on a flyover here during ongoing lockdown, police said. After a selfie video of the man's reckless ride went viral on social media, police arrested him for putting his life and that of others at risk and seized his 1000 CC bike.

Identified by police as Muniyappa, he rode his bike on the nearly 10-km long Electronic City flyover, accelerating almost to 300 KMPH as he whizzed past some vehicles, including cars autorickshaws and trucks that were moving in both directions.

"This video made viral by the rider...going at a dangerous speed of almost 300 kmph at Ecity flyover putting his own & others life at risk..CCB traced the rider & seized bike Yamaha 1000 CC.. handed over to traffic (police)," Bengaluru Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil tweeted, tagging the video.

A case of reckless driving has been registered against him, police said. They said the incident occurred during the week-long lockdown in force in the city and outskirts till Wednesday morning to contain the spread of coronavirus, leaving most roads deserted as people remained indoors. However, it was not known when exactly he undertook the ride. A fortnight ago, three youths who were doing wheelies on the city roads met with a ghastly mishap and lost their lives.
