Fisheries College felicitates its proud alumnus

Mangalore, May 5: Dr S Ayyappan, an alumnus of the College of Fisheries, Mangalore, who on January 1, 2010 had assumed charge as Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Secretary to Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) New Delhi, was warmly felicitated at his alma mater by the past and present faculty, staff and students on his first visit to the College after assumption of charge.

The function was organized at the behest of Dr. Ayyappan's guru and mentor Dr. H.P.C.Shetty, the Founder Director of Instruction of the College.

The programme was presided over by Dr. Suresh Honnappagol, the Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, while the University's Board of Management Member Shri Vasudeva Byndoor was the Guest of Honour.

Proposing the toast, Dr. H.P.C. Shetty said that January, 1, 2010 was a red letter day for the entire fisheries fraternity of the country, since it was for the very first time in the annals of the ICAR that a non-crop sciences graduate, and that too a fisheries graduate, was appointed to the coveted post of Director General, ICAR.

Dr. Ayyappan has risen to the highest possible position in the Government of India. His professional career has been a saga of hard work, dedication, brilliance and incorruptibility. Dr. K.M. Shankar, the Dean of the College, read out the citation of Dr. Ayyappan. Dr S. M. Shivaprakasha, Professor and Head, Inland Fisheries Research Station, Bijapur, proposed the vote of thanks.

Udupi, Jan 14: The Udupi district police on Tuesday arrested two suspected terrorists at the Indrali railway station in Udupi.

The two, who had reportedly arrived from Kerala at around 6 ap.m., were standing at the Indrali railway station platform.

Suspicious of their behaviour, the police took them to custody and subjected them to interrogation.

According to reports the duo had involved in the murder of Tamil Nadu police Special Sub-Inspector Wilson.

However, top cop of the district has refused to comment regarding the arrest of the youths.

Bengaluru, Feb 17: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday assured that the Centre is committed to stand by its promise of providing Rs 18,600 crore Bengaluru suburban Rail project.

Addressing a press conference after a post-budget interactive session with the representatives of the various trade bodies, industry leaders and others here, she said that the union cabinet has already given its clearance for the long-pending project.

Informing that the central government will have 20 per cent of its capital share in the project followed by another 20 per cent share from the state government, she said "beside this, the union government will stand for a sovereign guarantee for the rest of the 60 percent share, which can be raised through loans from external agencies".

Kasaragod, Mar 23: The district administration on Monday decided to abandon efforts to map out the movement details of the NRI who came from Dubai recently and came into contact with many in North Kerala.

The district has been completely locked down since Monday morning, on the directive of the Central Government. Prohibitory orders have been slapped in the district since Sunday night to restrict socialisation of the people.

As the person now in isolation have allegedly been non-cooperative, the authorities were finding it difficult to sketch out a rote map as his movement and socialisation has been so vast and wide since his arrival here on March 12.

The middle aged and popular NRI who landed at Karipur airpprt on March 11 had been in Calicut till midnight prior to boarding the Maveli Express to make it to his hometown Kasaragod, which is 160 kms away from Calicut. He had come into contact with very many, including two MLAs of the district, prior to getting tested positive and getting isolated in the hospital.
