CM hits out at Centre for 'step-motherly' treatment

Mangalore, May 6: Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda today accused the Centre of showing step-motherly treatment towards the state by not releasing badly needed funds for drought relief operations.

"If the Congress-led UPA government really wants to respond to the plight of the affected people in Karnataka, it should release Rs 2,500 crore out of Rs 5,600 crore loss incurred by farmers due to drought," Gowda added.

Speaking to reporters here, he said if the Centre has any "concern" for Karnataka, it should release the funds sought.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 18: Bindhu Sampath, the mother of Nimisha alias Fathima who travelled from Kerala to Afghanistan to join the Islamic State (IS), has sought the Central government's help to bring her daughter back to India.

"I saw a video of my daughter in which she was requesting her return to India. She has realised that India is her country, not Afghanistan. She is scared that she'll be put in jail over there. Responding to my mail, the Afghanistan government has said that the procedure will take time," said Bindhu Sampath.

"I believe in Indian laws. Let her be questioned and realise what is good or bad. I am waiting for the Central government's confirmation on the matter," added Sampath.

Around four years back, a team of 21 members which consisted of couples and children went to Syria from Kerala to join ISIS and lead an Islamic life. After they left, police registered a case against them, which has been handled by the National Investigation Agency.

Mandya, Aug 1: In a terrific incident, a college student has stabbed his own mother to death in Karnataka’s Mandya town over a trivial issue. The police have managed to nab the accused. 

According to police, the boy was irked by his mother rebuking him for staying out with his friends late in the night.

On Wednesday (July 29), she scolded him for not listening to her advice, following which he stabbed her to death, the official said. 

The student was arrested on July 30. He reportedly confessed to the crime. 

A police officer said that the woman was upset over her son frequently spending time with his friends till late in the night.

Mangaluru, May 17: A team of staff and students from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, have designed and developed a simple and cost-effective touch-less hand sanitiser dispenser kit at Research and Innovation Centre, Nitte.

According to a release here on Sunday, NITTE said that the most effective medicine for Covid-19 is social distancing, frequent use of sanitiser, and washing hands regularly. In work areas, many people sharing common sanitiser might lead to issues.

The developed product dispenses sanitiser upon sensing the presence of the hand. The product has features like automatic hand detection, indication for power, and sanitiser quantity in the system.
