22 couples enter wedded bliss at 'Community Celebration of Weddings'

Mangalore, May 6: As many as 22 couples entered wedded bliss on Sunday at the annual 'Community Celebration of Weddings' which was organised at the Rosario Cathedral, Mangalore under the auspices of St Vincent de Paul Society, Rosario.


Dr Aloysius Paul D Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore was the main celebrant for the nuptial ceremony.

According to the organisers, the objective of the ceremony is to help Catholic young men and women from lesser privileged economic background to marry with dignity and solemnity at minimal cost.

This was the 38th year celebration of community weddings and so far 575 couples have joined in holy matrimony. This year 22 couples from the various parts of the diocese of Mangalore will tie the knot. Around 2500 guests are expected to participate in the celebration. Apart from the wedding ceremony and the dinner, each couple will be gifted with dress material, house hold articles and a cash gift in Fixed Deposits. The total cost per couple will amount to Rs 20,000.

Mrs and Mr George Pinto, Superintendent of Excise D K District, Mangalore was the chief guest for the felicitation programme.

Jochin Monteiro, President, Society of St Vincent de Paul, Molly D Souza and Herald D Souza, Members of the society, Lawrence Pinto- Former Vice president of society among others were present.

Bengaluru, Jan 19: Australia has conferred its highest civilian honour, the Order of Australia honour, on Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw for her contribution towards advancing the country's relationship with India.

Australia's High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu invested Mazumdar-Shaw as an Honorary Member within the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division at a ceremony in Bengaluru on Friday, the Australian High Commission said in a statement.

An alumnus of Federation University Australia, Mazumdar-Shaw is the founder of Biocon, one of India's largest bio-pharmaceutical companies.

She contributes immensely to promoting women in STEM through the joint research programmes developed between Biocon and Deakin University, Australia, as part of her deep and long-standing commitment to gender equality, the statement said.

Mazumdar-Shaw - an Australian Global Alumni Ambassador - is also recognised for her sustained and significant contribution to industry academia collaboration between Australia and India, it said.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from Indian and Australian business, the diplomatic corps, and family, friends and peers of Mazumdar-Shaw, the statement said.

Speaking at the event, Sidhu said, "Dr Mazumdar-Shaw is a tireless champion of the commercial, educational, and people-to-people links between our two countries, and this award recognises her commitment to progressing the Australia-India partnership."

Honorary appointments in the Order of Australia are made to foreign nationals who have made an outstanding contribution to Australia or humanity at large.

Mazumdar-Shaw is the fourth Indian citizen to be awarded Australia's highest civilian honour.

This follows the conferment of superstar batsman Sachin Tendulkar in 2012, Former Attorney General of India Soli Jehangir Sorabjee in 2006, and Mother Teresa of Kolkata (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu) in 1982.

Mangaluru, Aug 2: Former Minister and Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader has gone into self-quarantine after former MLC Ivan D’Souza tested positive for coronavirus. 

Mr D’Souza had met Mr Khader and many other Congress leaders a day before receiving his throat swab test results. 

Mr Khader announced on twitter: “Have gone into self-quarantine with immediate effect after receiving the news about #Covid_19 positive test of Former MLC Ivan D’Souza & his wife Dr Kavitha. Being COVID Incharge DK District taskforce committee, I am one among Ivan's primary contact.”

“I am going to discharge my duties from home for the next few days. You can reach out over phone at any point of time. I appeal to all my colleagues and friends who may have come in contact with us in the last few days to get tested for #Covid_19” he tweeted.

Mysuru, Jan 20: As the Karnataka state Congress is still awaiting the appointment of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, MLA Satish Jarkiholi has said that in order to balance the caste and regional equations, All India Congress Committee (AICC) was planning to create four working presidents posts for KPCC.

Talking to media personnel here on Sunday, Mr Jarkiholi, who is considered to be in the race for the post, said that a clear picture about the constitution of additional posts of the working president in the KPCC would emerge in a week.

He added that it has been delayed due to the Assembly elections in Delhi.
