Bangalore, May 7: Eating beef is the undeniable right of Dalits, minorities and backward classes, who comprise the majority of the population of India, said Prof Kancha Ilaiah, Director, Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusion, Maulana Azad Urdu National University, Hyderabad.

Delivering a lecture on “Are OBCs Ready for a Social Revolution?” after inaugurating the Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty Trust here on Sunday, he lambasted the 'conspiracy of a section of people' against the multi culture of the country.

“Since the time of Shankaracharya there has been a systematic conspiracy against the multi culture and food habit of the people of the country. However, we do not require anybody's permission to consume our favorite food”, he said.

'Philosophical Identity'

Mr Ilaiah said that Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in India would not be ready for a social revolution until they construct their “philosophical identity” outside the Hindu fold.

“Mere political power will not do” for true liberation of backward sections”, he said.

He argued that while Dalits had found a way out of the Hindu fold through Buddhism, the OBCs were “stuck at the feet” of the Hindu hierarchical order.

He said that OBCs had failed to evolve a new cultural discourse of their own by building on the “philosophy of production”. Discovering their true roots in the production process of society, Prof. Ilaiah added, would lay the foundation for such a construction. He analysed that this, coupled with English education and greater exposure, could lead to change.

Prof. Ilaiah's summary dismissal of the role of socialist political leader Rammanohar Lohia in giving direction to the OBC-Dalit movement led to a debate after the lecture.

Ravivarma Kumar, former Chairman of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission, said that disruption and annihilation of caste, as envisaged by B.R. Ambedkar and later thinkers such as Lohia, was the only way forward for social revolution in India. C.G. Lakshmipathi, writer, said that judging political leaders singularly on the basis of their caste backgrounds does not help build an egalitarian society.

Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty Trust, inaugurated by Prof. Ilaiah, has been set up in memory of journalist and editor of “Mungaru” Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Days after some youths allegedly threatened to 'behead' local MLA and former Karnataka minister U T Khader during a pro-CAA rally here, the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Congress on Wednesday urged the police to register a case against the culprits.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths raising slogans that they will "cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary" during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Addressing reporters here, District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar demanded that the police register a case on their own against the youths. He said if prompt action was not taken against the youths seen in the video, the Congress will launch an agitation before the office of the Commissioner of Police.

When asked by reporters about the video, Khader had on Tuesday brushed aside the threat, saying he had not taken it seriously. The MLA had also said he did not file a complaint with police as he had concern for the families of the youths.

Shivamogga, May 21: An FIR has been registered against Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district of Karnataka over tweets on May 11 by the party's official handle about PM-CARES fund.

The FIR, registered under Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), identifies Gandhi as the handler of the social media account.

The complaint by advocate Praveen KV alleged that the Congress party, through the tweets, has made rumourous statements against the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was trying to provoke the people against the government.

According to the FIR, the Congress party had on May 11, 2020, made false and baseless allegations, claimed misappropriation of PM-CARES Fund and cast aspersions on the Government of India through the tweets.

"A Twitter account handled by All India Congress Committee headed by Sonia Gandhi had on May 11, 2020, published tweets terming PM CARES Fund as PM CARES Fraud. They had claimed that the PM CARES fund is not being used for the public," Praveen KV told ANI on Thursday.

He said that he has collected all the details related to the tweets and account from the handle and filed a complaint in the matter, following which a preliminary enquiry was conducted and an FIR was registered in the matter.

"They had also said that the Prime Minister was enjoying and going to foreign trips with this fund. This is clearly rumourous news against the Government of India in this COVID-19 pandemic situation. In this regard, I had filed a complaint. After a primary enquiry, the Sagar Police has filed an FIR against Sonia Gandhi, who heads the INC Twitter account," Praveen KV said.
