Mangalore, May 8: Worker groups in India need to take a leaf out of the Wall Street protests that shook America said Muhammad Nizamuddin, Chief Sectretary, All India Beedi Workers' Federation.

Addressing the gathering at the 8th state convention of the Karnataka State Beedi Workers' Federation in Mangalore on Tuesday, Mr. Nizamuddin said that workers in many countries have been carrying out agitations against injustice and those in India too must step up and fight.

Stating that a fair degree of awareness to fight for rights has come about in states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Nizamuddin said that the situation of the country is getting worse day by day as poverty is on the rise. Globalisation has resulted in the poor becoming more poor and the rich getting richer, he said.

In West Bengal, he said, the current Trinamool Congress had been carrying out atrocities against the working class. “After the Assembly elections in West Bengal, 64 of our brethren have been killed. More than 40,000 of our companions have been driven out of their houses and are being charged to stay in their own houses”, he said.

Beedi workers from different parts of the state attended the convention.
