Mangalore, May 8: Panchayats must make sure that water supply is monitored to houses via cent per cent meter system said A G Kodgi, Chairman, Third Finance Commission Report.

Chairing a Task Force meet at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Mr. Kodgi demanded an explanation from the officials of the concerned department regarding meter system being followed in the district. On being told that water is supplied to most houses without meter monitoring, he expressed discontentment and asked Shailaja Bhat, President, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Dr. K N Vijay Prakash, CEO, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, to convene a meeting at the earliest and direct all Gram Panchayats to adopt meter based water supply to houses.

“There is no water scarcity in Dakshina Kannada district. It is just that water is being misused. By bringing some houses under the meter rule and leaving out others, you are giving scope for misuse of water. There are people who use water for their farms and are not being held accountable since there is no meter and the rest of the village is left without water at the end of the day”, he observed.

Mr. Kodgi also asked officials to ascertain as to how many houses in the different villages have wells and how many are self-sufficient in water. “You must first make a list of how many houses actually need Panchayat water. You also do not have an idea as to how many MLDs a Taluk requires”, Mr. Kodgi pointed out to an official.

He also said on the occasion that there is enough surface water in the district which should be utilized. “Tanker supply and borewells are meaningless systems. They are ways to loot the state treasury. More the number of borewells, the more ground water level will go down”, he said.

A common lapse, Mr. Kodgi said, in the panchayats of various districts that he visited, was the inaccurate information being given to his team.

Dr. K N Vijay Prakash, CEO, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, brought to the notice of Mr. Kodgi that a proposal to provide water to 216 villages under the multi village scheme had been submitted to the government.

Bengaluru, Mar 5: Amulya Leona, the 19-year-old woman who captured a nation’s attention by shouting full-throated slogans, allegedly in support of Pakistan, at a rally in Bengaluru, has reportedly held her composure under grilling by the Special Investigating Team (SIT).

The woman was arrested after her speech to an audience of protesters against the Citizenship Amendment Act on February 19, and was slapped with sedition charges.

Sources in the police said Amulya Leona seemed to be absolutely normal during interrogation by senior cops, unlike most other persons in such circumstances.

Not once throughout the grilling nor in judicial custody did she break down.

Amulya is said to have defended herself on charges that she shouted pro-Pakistan slogans. She made it clear that by speaking out at the rally at Freedom House, she did not mean to support the enemy country and that she was not against India.

Lower-rung officers said Amulya Leona seemed to be considerably influenced by the late firebrand activist Gowri Lankesh, who was shot dead in 2017.

In fact, the policewomen to whose charge she was entrusted right after she was arrested are said to have heaved a sigh of relief when she handed over to custody of prison staff.

An urban legend going around in lower-rung police circles is that Amulya Leona attended the funeral of Gowri Lankesh and fainted near where the late activist was buried. “It’s impossible for a 19-year-old to show such grit. We have seen hardcore criminals breaking down in custody. Forget about breaking down, Amulya Leona is becoming stronger,” they explain.

Mangaluru, Aug 4: The Kasaragod district administration has decided to restore the e-pass system for daily commuters between Kasaragod and Mangaluru amid covid-19 crisis.

As covid-19 cases began to increase in Dakshina Kannada, the Kasargod district administration had unilaterally newly introduced of daily pass system on July 6 for entry and exit from Talapady border. This had inconvenienced hundreds of employees, who visited Mangaluru daily to eke a living.

The decision to resume the pass system was taken in a video conference of Kerala Revenue Minister Chandrasekharan with officials and elected representatives on August 3.

The minister said the Kasaragod district administration will resume issuing of passes for daily commuters between Kasaragod and Mangaluru. But they should undergo rapid antigen test for every week to renew their passes.

"Similarly, one-time interstate passes will be issued for those who want to take part in marriages, funeral and other functions in both states. Even they should undergo antigen test after returning from the functions,” the minister added.

As per the previous order, daily commuters, especially employees, had to stay in Mangaluru for 28 days before returning to Kasargod. Later, Kerala government relaxed rules on July 23 allowing only bank employees from Kasaragod to travel daily in their private vehicles to their workplace in Dakshina Kannada.
