Chittaranjan Das Shetty, five others bag Tulu academy awards

Mangalore, May 9, well known Tulu litterateur Bola Chittaranjan Das Shetty and theatre personality J Seetharama Shetty were among those who have been chosen for Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy's honorary award for 2012.

Mr Chittaranjan Das Shetty has been chosen for the honorary award in literature category and Seetharam Shetty in theatre category.

The third person chosen for the honorary award was T A Srinivas in recognition of his contribution in the field of Tulu cinema.

Announcing the award at a press conference here on Wednesday president of the academy, Umanath A Kotian said that each of them would be given away Rs. 10,000 cash, a certificate, a memento and a shawl.

Book award

He said, besides three honorary awards three eminent writers had been chosen for book awards. Puttige Padmanabha Rai had been chosen for book award in the field of novel, while Dr Ashok Alva and Rathnakara Rao had been chosen for the same awards in the fields of story writing and drama respectively, Mr Kotian said.

The book award comprises Rs. 5,000 in cash, a certificate, a memento and a shawl.

Both the awards will be presented at a function in to be held on June 16 at Town Hall in the city, he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 5: Lambasting Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa over the proposal to rename Ramanagara as Nava Bengaluru, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday said that such a move will be an insult to Lord Ram, after whom the district is named.

In a series of tweets, Kumaraswamy accused that renaming the district was a pretext to sell its fertile irrigated land to capitalists. Yediyurappa also wants to settle a score with me by renaming it, he alleged

"If Yediyurappa wishes to develop Ramanagara, he should release the funds allocated in the budget. If you want to develop it further, you will find support from me and my people. But, don't set fire to the districts' culture and identity by changing its name," he tweeted.

Mandya, Aug 1: In a terrific incident, a college student has stabbed his own mother to death in Karnataka’s Mandya town over a trivial issue. The police have managed to nab the accused. 

According to police, the boy was irked by his mother rebuking him for staying out with his friends late in the night.

On Wednesday (July 29), she scolded him for not listening to her advice, following which he stabbed her to death, the official said. 

The student was arrested on July 30. He reportedly confessed to the crime. 

A police officer said that the woman was upset over her son frequently spending time with his friends till late in the night.
