Clash in district prison: Nine undertrials shifted to to central jails in Dharwad, Bellary

Mangalore, May 10: Close on the heels of the free-for-all fist fight within the barracks of the district jail, nine under trials identified as 'trouble mongers' were shifted to central jails in Dharwad and Bellary by the department of prisons.

As per the direction of deputy inspector general of police (Prisons) VS Raju six of them were sent to Dharwad central jail and the rest to Bellary jail. The transfers are aimed at disciplining the undertrials.

District jail superintendent P S Ambekar said the decision to shift the undertrials was taken after Tuesday's violent fight inside the barracks.

He informed that three undertrials were undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital while two others had returned to the barracks after being discharged.

While Safwan Hussain, Shamshuddin, Sarfaraz, Ajmal, Abdul Majar and Mohideen Sadiq are lodged in the Dharwad jail, Umar Farooq, Jalaluddin and Mohammad Fayaz have been sent to Bellary, he said.

Shamshuddin, Ajmal, Abdul Majar and the three sent to Bellary were accused of fatally assaulting Dinesh Raj, manager of Kanchana Textiles at Hampankatta in the city on February 14.

Observing that it was the callousness on part of the head warder Jawaraiah which prompted the second round of assaults on Praveen Kulal and his associates, Ambekar said he will submit a report on the incident to the additional director general of police (prisons) KV Gagandeep soon.

"Jawaraiah claimed that the undertrials, who were housed separately, forcibly pushed him and made their way to attack Praveen and his associates," he said.

"Even a small incident in the district jail takes communal hues. The jail staff has taken steps to ensure that undertrials from different communities are housed in different barracks and are let out in different times for their daily routines," he said.

It was the assault on Abdul Majar by Praveen Kulal and his associates in the morning that provoked the fight. The associates of Majar later in the evening retaliated triggering a second round of clashes.

According to Ambekar there is a section of the undertrials, who revel in creating lawlessness in the jail. "Most of them are locals and may take advantage of the situation to create trouble. Transferring them to other prisons is the only way to contain such elements," he added.

The district jail, which was built in 1850 with a capacity to house 150 undertrials, at present has 240 undertrials, including 10 women.

Will protest if Indian Muslims are troubled by NRC, says Ramdev

Hubballi, Jan 30: Seeking to disabuse people of the notion that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), recently passed by the BJP-led central government threatened the legitimacy of Muslims in the country, yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Wednesday said that he would among the first to take to the streets should the community face any such trouble. “If the National Register of Citizens (NRC) threatens injustice to Indian Muslims, it I not just I, but a billion Indians will protest against its implementation,” he added.

Recalling his longstanding association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramdev said, “I have known Modi for more than 15 years, and I can assure you that he cannot be called anti-Muslim. There is nothing in the CAA that threatens the rights of Muslims, some of whom are being misled by a few.”

The yoga guru said that, while 99% of the Muslims in India were patriotic, the remaining ones were seeking to divide the country, which he said was resulting in Islam falling into disgrace. “I appeal to all Muslims to keep away from such anti-national forces seeking to bring a bad name to Islam,” said Ramdev, calling on the people to stay united in the face of the severe economic crisis that the country was presently in the grips of.

He added that he was as committed to his goal of getting black money back to India. However, when quizzed by journalists as to how long he was willing to wait for PM Modi to realise this objective, Ramdev said, “Chodi, mere aur Modi ke beech jagada mat lao (Please do not incite a fight between Modi and me).”

The yoga guru also endorsed the decision of the Centre to recognise singer Adnan Sami with a Padma award.

Congress expert in dividing parties, purchasing MLAs: Kumaraswamy over BSP row

Bengaluru, Jul 29: A day after Congress staged a nationwide 'Save Democracy' protest, Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy slammed Congress for "dividing" the political parties and "buying MLAs" and questioned their "democratic behaviour" to lure Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs who supported them.

Kumaraswamy, in a media statement, said, "Is it a democratic behaviour to lure MLAs of other parties through political shenanigans and later merging with them?"

"Congress is an expert in dividing political parties and purchase of MLAs," said Kumaraswamy adding, "If you are dividing the like-minded party MLAs through deceit, who would support you?"

He alleged that the term "horse trade" in politics came to be used because of Congress.

Congress had tied to divide the Janata Dal (Secular) in 2004. To this, he added, "To avoid the party being hijacked by the Congress, I had to oust the Congress-JD(S) coalition government through a political coup."

Kumaraswamy further accused, "Haven't the Congress who is making a big noise about the purchase of MLAs divided the JD(S) in the past? Is it not a fact that for the sake of one Rajya Sabha seat, the Congress government in Karnataka purchased eight JD(S) MLAs?"

Both -- Congress and BJP -- are "criminals" in purchase matter, he added.

Rajasthan Congress is in turmoil after simmering differences between Sachin Pilot and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot came out in the open. Pilot was removed as the Deputy Chief Minister and the state unit chief of Congress.

The Congress has accused the BJP of indulging in horse-trading to bring down the Gehlot government. The BJP has rejected the allegations.

Coffee Day gets first tranche of Rs 2,000-cr after disinvestment in GV Techparks

Bengaluru, Mar 30: Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL) has received the first tranche of Rs 2,000 crore following disinvestment of Global Village Techparks to repay debts following the death of its founder V G Siddhartha.
In August last year, CDEL executed definitive agreements with entities belonging to Blackstone Group and Salarpuria Sattva Group for investment in GV Techparks, a wholly-owned subsidiary of group company Tanglin Development Ltd (TDL), at an enterprise value of Rs 2,700 crore.
The balance amount is expected to be received after the receipt of few statutory approvals, CDEL said in a statement.
"Out of the money received in first tranche, the company has paid off its debts in full including principal and interest amounting to Rs 1,644 crore to the lenders despite difficult economic conditions," it said.
Post this payment, the consolidated debt of the company and its subsidiaries stands at Rs 3,200 crore as on March 27. This includes debt of Rs 1,400 crore of its subsidiary Sical Logistics Ltd where disinvestment process is in progress.
"The company and subsidiaries have repaid around Rs 4,000 crore to the lenders since the beginning of this financial year," CDEL said.
"With the continuous support of stakeholders of the company, the current management is working to ensure better liquidity and operational efficiency. The company is confident of the future ahead despite various challenges," it added.
The company has been in rough waters after its founder V G Siddhartha took his own life as debt strains began to emerge in his company. Since his death in July last year, CDEL has been trying to divest its assets to pare debts.
On July 30, 2019, CDEL informed stock exchanges about Siddhartha's disappearance. In a letter that was purportedly written by him, the Cafe Coffee Day founder said: "I could not take any more pressure from one of the private equity partners forcing me to buy back shares."
