Haj rush eases; so does passport process

May 10, 2012
Bangalore, May 10: Getting online appointments for passport applications just got easier as more slots are finally open at the Passport Seva Kendras for regular applications either through normal or tatkal process.

January this year, the Regional Passport Office (RPO) had started booking about 350 slots per day for Haj pilgrims due to a new rule that says travellers need to possess a passport to apply for Haj pilgrimage organised by the Haj Committee of India.

As a result, special counters were set up and those passports were processed on a priority basis.

From January, 350 appointments were set aside for Haj applicants and in March they were scaled down to about 120 a day.

On the downside, this had inconvenienced other applicants.

Slots that opened online 36 hours prior to the appointment date, disappeared in less than three minutes and applicants complained of having to try for more than 10 days continously before getting lucky enough to get an appointment.

Faced with a lot of complaints, the RPO?later opened their office to applicants to reduce the waiting time. Through this system, those applying through tatkal and those applying through normal procedure but needed the passport immediately for medical, education or employment reasons, could come to the Passport office directly. They were issued tokens so that they could be accommodated with an appointment at the Passport Seva Kendras, either on the same day or the next.

“This system will continue even though we have stopped accepting applications for Haj about 15 days ago. The demand has still not reduced, probably because of the holiday season,” Regional Passport Office K J?Srinivasa said.

While applications for Haj have stopped, those travelling on Umrah to Haj through private operators continue to apply for passports.

These applications, however, will not be treated on priority basis. Srinivasa added that there was no plan to increase the number of appointments despite growing demand, as they had reached the maximum at all the centres in Bangalore, Mangalore and Hubli.

Bowing to increasing demand for passports, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)?is likely to operate a mini Passport Seva Kendra from Gulbarga in the next few months. Unlike the other mainstream PSKs where some of the activities are outsourced to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the mini PSK will only use the software created by TCS and will be staffed by the MEA.

Bengaluru, Jun 7: Suspense over JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda contesting the Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka with Congress' support continues as KPCC president D K Shivakumar on Saturday said the party has fielded one candidate and the high command will decide on what do with surplus votes.

Mr Shivakumar also said his official takeover as party state unit president is likely to take place on June 14.

"Whatever our national leadership will decide... For now we are fielding only one candidate, regarding surplus votes whatever our high command says, we will abide by it," he said in response to a question about supporting Deve Gowda.

Polls for four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka is scheduled for June 19.

The Congress, which can win one seat with its strength in the assembly, has fielded veteran party leader Mallikarjun Kharge as the candidate, while the BJP is yet to decide on candidates for two seats it can win.

The JD(S), which has 34 seats in the assembly, is not in a position to win a seat in Rajya Sabha on its own, and will need support from one of the national parties with their surplus votes for this.

Minimum 44 votes are required for candidates to win.

Speculation is rife that congress is likely to support JD(S) with its surplus votes if the regional party fields Mr Gowda, and in return may seek favour during legislative council polls slated later this month.

Though JD(S) legislators are of the unanimous opinion that Mr Gowda should contest Rajya Sabha polls, the 87-year-old leader is said to be undecided and weighing options.

If he contests and wins, this will be the second Rajya Sabha entry for him, the first time being in 1996 as Prime Minister.

June 9 is the last date for filing nominations.

Stating that on June 8, Mallikarjun Kharge will file his nomination for Rajya Sabha polls, DK Shivakumar requested party workers not to come to Congress office or Vidhana Soudha, where the nomination will be filed, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Let your love and affection continue, but let's not create problems by gathering here. After the election is over, and once he (Kharge) wins, you can greet and congratulate him. Let's not bring a bad name to his seniority for not maintaining social distancing by gathering," he said.

Bengaluru, Jun 21: As many as 518 private hospitals and medical colleges empanelled under the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST) have been allowed to treat Covid-19 patients in Karnataka amid rising cases, an official said on Saturday.

"These 518 institutions across the state empanelled under ABArK are permitted to admit and treat Covid patients as per government protocols and criteria," the health official said.

The private hospitals can treat patients only if referred by public authorities such as BBMP Commissioner, Health department Director, District Health Officers and others.

In Bengaluru, there are 44 such empanelled private facilities. The entire list is available at www.arogya.karnataka.gov.in and also on the Health Department's website.

The hospitals will be paid an appropriate package rate for Covid management, said the official.

The state has not barred private hospitals from treating Covid patients but they have to mandatorily report all positive cases.

"Due to increasing number of Covid cases in the state, it was decided to involve private hospitals in treatment of such patients," said Additional Chief Secretary Jawaid Akhtar.
