Karwar, May 11: A CID team arrived in Dandeli on Friday to probe the murder of Madan Nayak, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Dandeli.

The state government had transferred the ACF murder case to CID on Wednesday following allegations that the Dandeli rural police had not handled it properly. The CID officials --- KP Bheemaih, SP, and BB Ashok Kumar, DSP --- visited the spot where the ACF was allegedly attacked by a group of tourists from Bagalkot. They held discussions with Subhash Gudimani, additional SP, Uttara Kannada, and other local officials.

Meanwhile, the alleged delay by the Dandeli police in sending information about the arrest of Aravind Chauvan, an employee of the Dandeli City Municipal Corporation, and his wife Shailaja Chauvan, and Anand Sign, an engineer with KPTCL, has kicked up a row.

All the three are government servants and are in the custody of police on the charges of murdering Madan Nayak. Friends and relatives of Nayak have alleged that the Dandeli rural police have deliberately withheld the information about their arrests from the government departments concerned. They said that it is mandatory on the part of the police to give information about the arrests to the respective departments.

DK Shivakumar, deputy director of education, Sirsi education district, said the police have not given information about the arrest of Shailaja Chauvan, a teacher, to the BEO of Haliyal taluk. Once the information is received, the department will act as per rules, he said.

The officials of Dandeli City Municipal Council said that police should have sent a copy of FIR and information of arrest of Aravind Chauvan to CMC officials. Even four days after the arrest of Aravind, no such information had come from police. ``Once the police inform us about the arrest, we will the inform deputy commissioner who will take action,'' the CMC sources said.

Sub-inspector of police Dandeli Rural station Praveen Nilammanavar said all papers about the arrests had been forwarded to the departments concerned on Thursday itself and would reach them on Friday.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Members and activists of social organisation Rakshana Vedike on Thursday staged a protest and demanded the arrest of BJP MLA Somashekhara Reddy, for his 'provocative' remarks and statements.

The protesters gathered near Gandhi’s statue near Maurya circle in the city and demanded that the BJP MLA should be arrested immediately.

The protesters alleged that Reddy’s remark were aimed at inciting communal hatred and that his remarks do not do justice to his being an elected representative of the people in the state assembly.

Bengaluru, Feb 16: Deputy chief minister Laxman Savadi’s election to the lone vacant council seat, for which a bypoll has been called, is only a formality as the only other candidate in the contest, independent BR Anil Kumar, dropped out on Saturday.

Kumar conveyed his decision to council secretary and returning officer Vishalakshmi. He decided to withdraw from the February 17 bypoll after failing to get support from Congress and JD(S) legislators.

The bypoll was necessitated after sitting member Rizwan Arshad of Congress resigned as he moved to the legislative assembly as an MLA. Rizwan won the Shivajinagar bypoll in December last year.

“Since the notification on candidates in the fray, after the last date of withdrawal, has already been published, irrespective of any candidate’s retirement, the election has to be conducted,” an official said.

Savadi’s victory was always assured as BJP has 119 members in the House.

Still, Ramanagara BJP district president Rudresh and MP BY Raghavendra reportedly approached Kumar, urging him to withdraw. Kumar, however, denied that he was persuaded by BJP.

“I entered the fray thinking secular parties and likeminded MLAs will support me, but that didn’t happen, so I decided to retire,”he said.

A section of Congress and JD(S) politicians, led by former minister HD Revanna, had persuaded Kumar to enter the contest with the hope that disgruntlement among some BJP legislators over Savadi’s promotion as the deputy CM would result in an upset.

Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy also offered to support Kumar. Siddaramaiah of Congress refused to do the same. Congress and JD(S) did not field any candidates of their own as they don’t have the requisite numbers in the House.

Savadi must get elected to the council before February 20, otherwise he will lose his cabinet role. According to rules, a person who is not a member of either House should get elected within six months after becoming a minister. Savadi took oath on August 20 last year.
