Rain lashes DK, claims lineman's life

Mangalore, May 13: The pre-monsoon showers coupled with thunder and lightning lashed most part of Dakshina Kannada district causing loss of life and property.

A young lineman was electrocuted to death while being engaged in the repair work on an electric pole in front of a Church at Vamanjoor on the outskirts of the city.

Local sources said that Jerald Vegas, a resident of Kavoor, was killed when a bolt of lightning followed a wire and grounded his body atop a 30-foot high pole at around 5:00am on Sunday.

The water levels in all major rivers of the district have increased in past 24 hours.

The Netravathi and Payaswini rivers are nearing the danger level. Some areas in Karkala taluk were marooned, disrupting communication network and electricity.

Low lying areas were inundated, rendering several people homeless.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter Scale jolted Karnataka on Friday morning while another with a magnitude of 4.7 was felt in Jharkhand.

The tremors were felt in Hampi (Karnataka) and Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

According to NCS, the aftershocks were felt at 6:55 am in both the places today.

Kasaragod, Mar 23: With 19 more positive cases reported on Monday, surveillance against people coming out of their houses and wandering around in public places has been intensified in the district.

With today's addition, the total number of positive cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased to 38 in Kasaragod.

Mangaluru Jul 11: A member of Adyar gram panchayat, who was attacked by a gang last night breathed his last at a private hospital in the city.

Mohammed Yaqoob, who was a BJP backed member of Adyar GP was attacked near his village by a gang at around 9 pm on Friday.

In spite of sustaining serious injuries, he managed to return home. 

He then hired an auto-rickshaw and went to Highland Hospital along with his son. 

However, he breathed his last there without responding to any treatment.

According to sources, the victim knew one of the assistants.

It is suspected that political or personal rivalry might be the reason for the attack. However the exact motto behind the attack is not yet known. 

A case has been registered in Kankanady Rural police station.
