Serve community, guide youth: Bishop to Catholic Sabha

May 14, 2012
Mangalore, May 14: Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D'Souza on Sunday urged voluntary organisations to serve the people better.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the annual convention of Catholic Sabha of Mangalore here.

The Bishop said the Catholic Sabha was a prominent organisation under Mangalore diocese. It had units in almost all churches under the diocese. It should rise to the occasion whenever the community was in trouble. It should keep itself active in social and community service activities. The sabha should organise programmes to guide youth on government services, he said.

Antony Mendonca, a retired Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) officer, suggested setting up of a fund for helping the poor Catholics to build houses. He said that there was a need to set up an institute to guide and train youth on getting better jobs.

Mr. Mendonca said many youth among Catholics instead of pursuing higher education were showing interest on working abroad after completing their SSLC and Pre-University Course. It was due to poverty in families. Women on the other hand were pursuing higher education and professional education and were getting good jobs. This caused an imbalance in the community. There was a need to set up higher education fund to prevent men from going abroad due to poverty. The fund should help men go for higher education.

B.V. Pinto, Judge, Karnataka High Court, spoke.
