Science Camp for high school students

Mangalore, May 16: The three-day science camp for students of class IX and X by Centre for Advanced Learning commenced on May 15 in the city.

About 45 students from various schools in and around Mangalore are participating in the camp. The purpose of camp was to create awareness and interest in the young minds of students about learning science through experiments.

The inaugural day highlight was that experts in Physics from Pune and Bangalore guided the event. From Pune, Suyash Dake an IT professional who opted for profession of propagating science through experiments lead the team.

He has to his credit 16 Sunday schools running through various centres in Maharashtra and Karnataka teaching science through experiments to the children from class III to X. Physics is his forte. He also produces and supplies science kits to educational institutions through his firm. Thus, he is devoted to science and inculcates interest in science subjects in students catching them young.

He was accompanied by his sister Dr. Sujatha from Bangalore who is a past scientist of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The highlights included demonstrative experiments to begin with by the team followed by several individual experiments by participants through the kits provided to them by Mr. Dake and his team. There was a paper model of first satellite Arya Bhata prepared by the students through the kit supplied to them by the team. The past scientist of ISRO, Dr. Sujatha dwelt in length the history of progress of Satalite technology in India. The team was assisted by Mr. Srikanth Pai a Ph.D. student from IISc and others.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the presentations by Mr. Dake and his team who showed their inquisitiveness in the subject through umpteen number of questions which were answered by the team to their satisfaction. Next two days also there will be similar programs in the field of Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology guided by experts in those fields.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: Karnataka government has said that as of now six cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the state, including one person who died.

"Till date six COVID-19 cases have been reported in the state including one death. The 5 Coronavirus positive cases are in isolation at the designated hospital in Bengaluru," the Karnataka government said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Health Department of Karnataka on Sunday said that all the family members and other contacts of the 76-year-old man who died of coronavirus in Kalaburagi are being monitored closely.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed that India's tally in the number of positive cases for coronavirus has reached 107 on Sunday.

Mangaluru, May 18: A boat which was engaged in an operation to fix the pipe relating to the reverse osmosis plant of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) at Tannibavi turned turtle due to strong wind.

Two workers had gone missing in the incident that occurred on Sunday late evening, and one of them was rescued shortly thereafter.

The person who has not yet been found happens to be Pandu Pist from Mumbai. The person who was rescued was Santosh from Dakshina Kannada.

Three workers from West Bengal who were facing danger were also rescued.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: About 20,000 quintal boiled rice has been distributed among the ration card holders through Public Distribution System, District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said here on Saturday.

As people in the district prefer boiled rice over white rice, the government has given approval for distributing boiled rice. From next month, only boiled rice will be distributed in the district at fair price shops.

In the last two days, rice has been distributed among 61,302 cardholders in the district.
