vittala11 Mangalore, May 16: A month after appearing for internal assessment examination in handcuffs, Vittala Malekudiya, who is in judicial custody on charges of being an alleged Naxal sympathizer, has been denied permission to appear for his second semester examination conducted by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism in Mangalore University.

The examination is expected to start from May 21.

In a letter, University Registrar Chinnappa Gowda requested the jurisdictional Judicial Magistrate First Class, Belthangady, not to direct the University to grant permission to the tribal boy as his attendance was below the required 75 per cent, sources said.

Vice-Chancellor Shivashankara Murthy said said that the university norms prescribed that a postgraduate student should have 75 per cent or more in order to write the final examination. “Vittala Malakudiya does not meet this criterion. We have to follow the rules,” he said.

The university brought this norm to the notice of the court, which had passed orders to allow the student to write the internal examination on April 16. “We are bound to bring this norm to the notice of the court. We will act as per the directions of the court,” Mr. Murthy said.

However, the student's advocate Dinesh Hegde Ullepady said they would question the decision of the university before the High Court.

The 22-year-old student was arrested on March 3 along with his father at his house in Kuthlur in Belthangady taluk by Anti Naxal Force.

Lucknow, Feb 4: Even as anti-NRC protests continue to rage across the country, the Lucknow University has queered the pitch by demanding citizenship proof from RTI applicants.

The Lucknow University (LU) refused to provide the information sought by the people who filed the Right to Information (RTI) unless they furnished the proof that they were Indian citizens.

Alok Chantia, one of the RTI applicants who was refused information by the varsity, said that he had lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor of the varsity but even then he could not get the desired information.

"It is shocking how the university has twisted the RTI law as per its whims and fancy. It does not have any authority to do so," said the RTI applicant.

Chantia, also a faculty member at a degree college here, had sought details of appointment of teachers for self-financed courses and their pay scale.

"It is possible that some applicants who may not be familiar with the provisions of the RTI, may have furnished proof of their citizenship to the varsity to get the information but that cannot become a rule," he pointed out.

When contacted, university officials admitted that such a practice had been going on in the varsity for the past few years.

"This practice started during the tenure of the former vice-chancellor S.P. Singh and still continues," said a senior varsity official.

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Popular Front of India leader Mohammed Saqib came down heavily on Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha for justifying the Dec 19 firing which claimed two Muslim lives in the city.

He was addressing a mammoth crowd of around two lakh people, mostly Muslims, who had gathered at Shah Garden at Adyar in Mangaluru today to register their protest against CAA, NRP, NRC, besides police atrocities on Muslims in Mangaluru.

Criticising the way the commissioner handled the situation on December 19, he said the people have all the right to agitate when their citizenship is endangered.

“Two men lost their lives. Then Commissioner started releasing misleading videos (to justify the killing),” he said questioning the top cop: “Who are you? Are you a British?”

“What kind of doctor you are? You are a doctor in creating false stories,” he said whiling taking on the top cop for claiming that protesters had tried to storm the Mangaluru North Police Station.
