Consumers have power to demand samples as per Food Safety Act'

Mangalore, May 16: Consumers need to be made aware of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) 2006, which has given them considerable power said Ujwal Kumar, Country Head, CQM Quality Management Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi.

Speaking at a training programme on Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 organised by Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mangalore on Wednesday, Mr. Kumar said that as per the Act, consumers can go to any food business place and demand samples for testing. “They can inform the nearest government officer to test the sample. If their complaints are found to be accurate, they are even entitled for a reward”, Mr. Kumar informed.

If a consumer falls prey to contaminated food, he/she will be entitled to receive compensation, Mr. Kumar added.

Stating that all stakeholders that come into picture right from transportation of the food product from fields to the shopkeeper who sells the finished food product to the consumers are all covered under the Act, Mr. Kumar said that they are required to obtain licenses from the designated officer to function legally.

If any of them is found violating hygene and food safety norms, they will be entitled to punishment which includes fine amounting to lakhs of rupees and imprisonment, Mr. Kumar revealed.

He also said that by implementing the Act, the government is looking to maintain food safety standards even in the imported foods. “Unlike before, the government will now be strict in checking of the imported food products”, he said. Food catering services also fall under the purview of the Act, he added.

Bengaluru, May 26: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa has been urged to cancel the proposed SSLC examinations in Karnataka and allow “mass-pass” for every student in the wake of covid-19 crisis. A group of intellectuals and educationists have put forth this demand.

In the letter released by educationist VP Niranjan Aradhya, said that they were listing the scientific reasons to the CM for cancellation of exams which are slated to be held from June 25 to July 4th.

In the letter, the intellectuals have elucidated a number of reasons for cancelling the upcoming exams. “There are close to 8.5 lakh students and 2.5 lakh staff involved. If we include parents who would drop their kids at the exam centre, around 30 lakh people will be involved in the process, making it a risky affair. Though the government has said that it will separate the students with fever or other ailments, will students admit to having fever? What if they consume paracetamol and come to write exams?” asks the letter. 

Added to this, the question papers have to be sent from the district and taluk centres and there may be chances of transmission.

“Even if we conduct exams, then what about the students who have failed? Every year, around 2.5 lakh students fail in the exam. Will the government conduct the supplementary exams again? The whole process of conducting exams comes at a huge cost of Rs 20 cr to Rs 25 crore. Hence, we are suggesting that the government cancels the exams and pass the entire group of student en masse,” said the letter.

Madikeri, Apr 27: Four labourers, who were travelling to Kerala via Makutta on foot, were stopped by Karnataka Forest Department officials and handed over to police.

Police said on Monday that the labourers identified as Anish, Radhakrishna, Shrinil and Prabhakar, who were working in the Coffee plantations in Chembellur and Ontiyangadi. As the roads to Kerala were sealed following lockdown, they were held up in the district.

The forest guards, who spotted them walking through the forest area, brought them back to the town as per the directions of the higher officials last evening. DCF Shivashankar, ACF Konerira Roshni and Ranger Arun Kumar were present.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: The Director-General of Police (DGP), Praveen Sood said on Wednesday that grocery stores and supermarkets can stay open for 24 hours across the state for people’s convenience.
Sood’s statement came on Wednesday following panic among people after the government’s announcement of a 21-day long nationwide lockdown starting on March 24.
