Mangalore, May 17: A case has been slapped against Srinivas Padakannaya and his wife Swati for misguiding the police, said Seemanth Kumar Singh, Mangalore Police Commissioner.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference at his office in the city on Thursday, Mr. Singh said that Swati had misled the police stating that her husband had slipped into Phalguni river from his two wheeler. Padakannaya too had given false information to Padmavathi Hospital in Surathkal as per the directions of his wife, stating that he had been attacked by three people who had come in a Tata Sumo car and taken him out of the river. It appears that he had shaved his head to hide his identity during these days, the Commissioner said.

During investigation the police found that Padakannaya had incurred losses in his share business. It was also found that Padakannaya had drawn Rs. 700 from SBI ATM at Sringeri on May 12 and Rs. 100 from SBI ATM at Murdeshwar. ATM Camera footages also showed Mr. Padakannaya drawing money. When Padakannaya was questioned about this, he spilled the beans and revealed to the police that whatever he and his wife had done was all a drama after having got scared by the financial losses that incurred, Mr. Singh said.

In spite of search operations at the river, police had got no clue for 4 days. The behavior of Ms. Swati and her parents had aroused suspicions as they were not cooperating with the police in investigation. They were instead threatening to file a case against us. Besides, the very explanation that Padakannaya had slipped into the river seemed suspicious to us and we went ahead with our investigation accordingly, Mr. Singh said.

A case has been booked against the four accused (Padakannaya, Swati, and her parents). “I find it shocking that people can stoop to this level. If they can cheat the police, they can cheat anyone and we suspect that they might have cheated others too”, Mr. Singh said.

He also clarified on the occasion that police had not demanded money from Padakannaya, as was said in a section of the media quoting Padakannaya. “On questioning, he (Padakannaya) denied that he had given any such statement to the media”, Mr.Singh said.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.

Bengaluru, Feb 5: Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday said that he has demanded a report on the Shaheen School incident after reports emerged that children were allegedly interrogated by the police for hours at a stretch, while not allowing parents to be present.

Terming the incident a very sensitive matter as it involves children, Basavaraj Bommai said, "I have asked for a report on the Shaheen School incident. As it is a very sensitive and serious issue, I have asked the police to handle it carefully."

"I have asked the police to take the help of the women and child protection committee at the district level. However, I have been told that the police had visited the area where the play was done and no interrogation of children in isolation took place. Nevertheless, I have asked the police to handle the issue with care and do everything within the law," Basavaraj added.

The matter pertains to a programme organised as a part of the Republic day celebrations where the children in Shaheen School in Bidar had staged a play against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had protested alleging that the play at Shaheen School in Bidar was derogatory. In the play, the participants were shown staging an anti-CAA sequence where there were dialogues encouraging non-cooperation with anyone asking for documents. A case was registered against the school management.

Meanwhile, CEO of Shaheen Education Institute, Bidar, Tauseef Madikeri had said, "Police have invoked Sections 124A, 505 and 504 of the IPC against the institution, over a play staged against CAA and NRC. It is beyond anyone's imagination. Deputy SP visited the classroom and interrogated the students."

Karnataka police had sealed the offices of the school after its students participated in the play. Meanwhile, the police had questioned students of Shaheen School after a play against the CAA and NRC was staged during the Republic Day celebrations.

The child rights groups, teachers and educationists had issued a statement condemning the police interrogation in the incident.
