Mangalore, May 17: The much awaited Sri Bhoothanantheshwara Halli Cricket Tournament - II took off to a spectacular start this morning with the formal inauguration attended by Bollywood celebrities Sohail Khan and Avinash Adik.

The four-day tournament, which will conclude on May 20 is organised under the auspices of Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple and Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Bhajana Mandali.

As many as 77 village teams have registered for the event and the winner who is determined by knockout matches will gain Rs. 3 lakhs in cash prize. The total value of all cash prizes of the event is over Rs. 6 lakh.

The venue of this limited-overs under arm rubber ball tournament is the playfields adjacent to Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple, Badaga Yedapadavu, Mijar in Mangalore taluk.

The inauguration ceremony commenced with the welcome address by Kanthappa Shetty of Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Bhajana Mandali, followed by introductory Address by Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, the chief co-ordinator of the event. Mr. Shetty recalled the success of the first Halli Cricket Tournament held last year and hoped that the people will similarly co-operate this time too with enthusiastic participation and peaceful, disciplined conduct of cricket mela.

The inaugural ceremony was marked by lighting of the lamp by Sohail Khan. Reflecting true grace he courteously passed on the honour to being the first to light the lamp to Mrs. Premalatha Shetty, the elderly mother of the event chief co-Ordinator Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, who was present on the dais.

In his message to the audience, Sohail Khan said he was very happy to attend this unique event and wished the participants all the best.

Echoing the spirit of sportsmanship, he shouted out loud: “May the best team win!” to the delight of the thrilled audience.

Bollywood Producer Avinash Adik, who was the chief guest, was full of praise for Vijaynath Vittal Shetty's love for his home town. “Not everyone who prospers in the big cities will think of doing something for the folks back home. It takes a large heart for a man to do the deeds like what Vijaynath Shetty does,” he said.

It was due to this reason that both he and his film industry colleague Sohail Khan had made it a point to attend the event despite not having slept the entire previous night due to tight shooting schedules, he added.

The crowds were pleasantly surprised when Sohail Khan went aside to change into the Halli Cricket T-Shirt and turban and went to the cricket pitch to face a bombardment of balls from the first contesting team. To everyone's shock and surprise, Khan proved to be an expert batsman as he effortlessly shot sixer after sixer sending the ball soaring into the sky.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Karnataka Library Department’s mobile application, which is said to be the first of its kind initiative in the country has seen an exponential growth in downloads during the COVID-19 lockdown, a senior Minister said on Friday. The main reason that the application is growing is due to the heavy students demand as schools and colleges are closed during the 21-day nationwide lockdown.

Students are relying on online material for their studies as they can’t step out of the house and risk being infected.

The Library Department's efforts to keep readers active through the lockdown time, by prompting them to utilise its e-initiatives is paying off, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Suresh Kumar said.

"The app is seeing exponential increase in downloads since its launch. As many as 16,500 people have taken it; while ten thousand people have downloaded it during this brief lock down time itself," he said.

E-library mobile app was released by the library department on February 26.

There are over one lakh e-books available on department's digital platform ranging from arts, humanity, school curriculum, competitive exams and self help to classic novels - all for free for the readers.

"Its needless to say, the variety of attractive content that is available in the app is creating all the buzz among the public. Not just the books, the app contains over 600 educational videos too," the Minister said in a statement.

Considering that over 16,500 readers have downloaded the app since its launch a couple of months back, its high time, we see this domain as an opportunity for growth, he said, and stressed on the need for better adaptability approaches to the changing times.

New Delhi, Feb 24: A book on the history of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will become a part of a course in the Islamic University of Indonesia, as the party’s two consecutive victories in India’s general elections has evoked interest among academicians, a faculty member said.

The book, titled Bhartiya Janata Party — Past, Present & Future, Story of World’s Largest Political Party and written by Shantanu Gupta, will become a part of the syllabus for undergraduate students of South Asian studies in the Department of International Relations.

Hadza Min Fadhli, a faculty member at the university, said there was a rising interest in the BJP’s rise among academicians in Indonesia, especially after the party won two general elections in India.

He said the book would be part of the syllabus for undergraduate courses in South Asian studies in the Department of International Relations.

Mr. Hadza said he got to know about the book during a recent visit to India as part of the Kautilya Fellowship programme, organised by the India Foundation. “We in Indonesia intend to further strengthen our relations with India. Therefore, it is important to understand its ruling party. We expect the BJP would also intend to do the same,” Mr. Hadza said.

When asked about the book being selected to be a part of a course in an Indonesian university, Mr. Gupta said global recognition of his work is immensely satisfying.

This book chronicles the history of the BJP which, Mr. Gupta said, described the saffron party as the latest political manifestation of the various nationalist movements that the country has seen.

Mr. Gupta has authored five other books, including a biography of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and a book on football in India.
