Govt must intervene, allow Vittala to write exams: Kakkilaya

Mangalore, May 18: Government itself has to create an opportunity for tribal boy Vittala Malekudiya to write his exams, said B V Kakkilaya, senior CPI leader.

He was speaking at a protest organised by CPI in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office demanding the release of Mr. Vittala and his father Linganna Malekudiya.

The jailing of Mr. Vittala, an MCJ student of Mangalore University, based on allegations that he is a naxal supporter and denying him the right to write his exams citing attendance shortage is sheer injustice. The government itself will have to take an initiative and allow Mr. Vittala to write his exams, Mr. Kakkilaya said.

If mere possessing a book on Bhagat Singh amounts to supporting naxals, then hundreds of people would have to be put behind bars. The entire episode is just to cover up the atrocities being carried out on the Malekudiya tribe by ANF. The government too is playing a role in supressing and threatening the local tribal people so that it can hand over their lands to multinational companies, Mr. Kakkilaya alleged.

An appeal addressed to the Chief Minister to clear Mr. Vittala and Mr. Linganna Malekudiya of all charges and release them was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on the occasion. It was also demanded in the appeal that government shoulder the responsibility of Mr. Vittala's studies.

Jul 6: At least 8 lakh Indians may be forced to leave Kuwait as the country's legal and legislative committee has approved a draft expat quota Bill, reported.

The Bill, which states that Indians should not exceed 15 percent of the population, was determined as constitutional by the National Assembly, local media reported.

It will soon be transferred to the respective committee so that a comprehensive plan is created.

Expats account for 30 lakh of Kuwait's 43 lakh population. Indian community constitutes the largest expat community in Kuwait, totalling 14.5 lakh.

The move comes as the number of Covid-19 cases has spiked in the country, with 49,000 cases being reported so far.

Bengaluru, Jan 14: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the government of Karnataka while hearing the plea for ordering Judicial probe into the December 19, violence and police action in Mangaluru.

On December 19, the local police while taking action against anti-CAA and NRC protesters had fired at them which had killed two citizens. The police action was then followed by curfew in the region for over 48 hours.

The High Court bench hearing the plea of JD(s) leader Iqbal and Sullia Pattan Panchayat member Iqbal seeking its intervention to order judicial probe into the matter has issued the notice to the government.

Mangaluru, May 31:  Even as the worst locust attack on India in recent years raised concerns over its impact on crops, swarms of locusts have triggered panic in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada too. 

Farmers in the coastal district were taken aback when they found the swarms of locusts, which they feared as the arrival of desert locusts in the region.

According to reports, Renjalady village under the limits of Nuji Baltila Gramp Panchayats in Kadaba taluk and Shirlalu village in Belthangady taluk witnessed locust attacks in last couple of days. 

“Locust swarms were seen in many areas. We have also alerted agriculture department. Already insects have destroyed crops of many farmers,” said a farmer in Shirlalu village.  

Joint director of Dakshina Kannada district agriculture department MC Seetha confirmed that officials have received information from villagers about the locust scare and entemologists have already visited the place to collect more information.

Not Desert Locusts?

“We contacted entemologists and forwarded the pictures that farmers sent to us. Looking at the picture, entemologists have opined that it may be calotropis locust or colour grasshopper. Desert locusts usually arrive in lakhs,” said Ms Seetha. Desert locusts that are destroying crops in other parts of India may not come to Dakshina Kannada, she added.
