Bridegroom among 4 drown in Cauvery River

Madikeri, May 18: Tragedy struck a marriage party when the 22-year old bridegroom and two others, including his mother, drowned in Cauvery river near here just an hour before he was to tie the knot making a vain attempt to rescue an eight-year old girl.

Shivanna was about to get married to 20-year old Lakshmi at a community hall in a temple along the banks of Cauvery when he heard the cries of the girl who slipped and fell into the river and her mother.

Though the muhurat was just an hour away, Shivanna plunged into the river to save the girl and her mother. Seeing her son jump into the river, his mother also followed suit.

All the four met with a watery grave, much to the shock of the families of the groom and bride, who was shocked by the sudden turn of events.

A pall of gloom descended at the place which was till then abuzz with people busy making arragements for the marriage.

Rs 26 lakhs worth gold seized at Mangaluru Airport, one held

Mangaluru, Feb 26: Customs officials at Mangalore International Airport on Wednesday arrested a man for trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 26 lakh by concealing it in his rectum.

The accused has been identified as Moideen Arzan, a resident of Uppala, Kasaragod.

According to police, he arrived from Dubai by an Air India flight and was attempting to smuggle the gold which he had converted in the form of paste and concealed in rubber capsules inside his rectum.

KCCI appeals to exclude Dakshina Kannada from list of corona hotspot areas

Mangaluru, Apr 12: Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has appealed to the Additional Chief Secretary to Karnataka government Jawaid Akhtar to exclude Dakshina Kannada district from hotspot/ red zone area pertaining to coronavirus, saying that the district has not reported any new case since last five days.

KCCI president Isaac Vas said DK district has not reported any new case of COVID-19 in the last five days. Of the 12 cases reported in the district, six are from Kasargod and one from Bhatkal.

None of the patients suffering from coronavirus are in ICU or put on ventilator, he said in a statement.

South Western Railway gearing to turn 300 coaches into isolation wards, quarantine hubs

Hubballi, Mar 31: In a bid to increase the country's capacity for isolation facilities, the Railways is converting sleeper class coaches into isolation wards by modifying the coaches as per prototype issued by Railway Board to make them suitable to act as quarantine hubs. On South Western Railway (SWR) a total of 312 coaches will be converted for isolation/quarantine wards.

"The coaches will be equipped with basic facilities needed as per medical guidelines. Provision is being made for charging points of mobiles and laptops. Mosquito nets with space for paramedics etc are also being made available. Each coach will provide 8 berth cabin for isolation facility.

Zonal Railways have been advised to prepare coaches as per isolation cabin prototype to meet the needs of the patients by Railway Board," a press statement of SWR reads.

The efforts of Indian Railways have been aimed not only to supplement the present health infrastructure of the nation but also to contribute to national efforts to fight the coronavirus.

According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country stand at 1,251.
