Kulur drowning: Surathkal fraud couple released on bail

Mangalore, May 19: A Surathkal based couple and their accomplices, who were arrested by Mangalore city police for misleading police by fabricating a cock and bull story to evade their debtors, have been released on bail by a city court on Friday.

Three persons - 21-year-old Swathi, who had contrived a story that her husband Srinivas Padakannaya (26), had drowned in the Phalguni at Kulur while returning home on May 11 and Padakannaya himself for feigning an incident of drowning, assault and kidnap, and Swati's father Vijayendra Rao, who supported them, were arrested by police on Thursday.

As the accused were arrested under bailable and non-cognisable sections 177 and 182 of the Indian Penal Code, the court released them on bail. Kasturi Rao, who had evaded arrest by getting admitted to a hospital, also secured bail.

The police's request seeking police custody of Srinivas Padkannaya for further investigation was turned down by the court. The police had placed the request to corroborate prime evidences which included video footage showing Srinivas Padakannaya drawing money from an SBI ATM in Sringeri on May 12 and in Murudeshwar on May 15,

The family, in order to avoid repaying loans to the tune of several lakh availed from money lenders, had staged the accidental drowning and kidnap of Srinivas Padakannaya.

Bengaluru, Apr 20: The cumulative positive cases of COVID-19 in Karnataka stand at 408, including 16 deaths and 112 people discharged.

Karnataka's Department of Health and Family Welfare in a media bulletin said: "As of 5 pm on April 20, cumulatively 408 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state. It includes 16 deaths and 112 discharges."

Out of the remaining 280 cases, 278 COVID-19 positive patients including one pregnant woman in isolation at designated hospitals are stable, and two are in ICU, added Health and Family Welfare Department.

"18 new cases have been confirmed for COVID-19 in the State from Sunday 5 pm to Monday at 5 pm," added the department.

Chikkamagaluru, June 6: The Chikkamagaluru district has become free from confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The last two of the 16 covid patients in the district were discharged today after they were treated and tested negative.

P 2765, a 28-year-old man and P 2766, a 38-year-old man were discharged, said Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham. Nine others were discharged from hospital yesterday.

Till May 22, Chikkamagaluru district had not recorded any positive and had remained a green zone till then.

However, with the influx of stranded people from Maharashtra and Delhi, the district had registered 16 covid positive cases.

 “As on today, there are no active covid-19 cases in the district. However, we should be attentive and take all the precautionary measurers,” the DC said.

The officer has appealed to the public to maintain social distancing in public places and wear masks.

Udupi, Jan 4: A 37-year-old Udupi district JD(S) spokesperson allegedly committed suicide at his residence here last night, police said on Saturday.

It identified the deceased as Pradeep G Bailoor (37).

He was working as the District JD(S) spokesperson for many years.
