Karwar bandh over schoolgirl's mysterious death peaceful

Karwar, May 20: A bandh called by various organisations in Karwar on Saturday to protest against the alleged police inaction and the delay in the investigation of the death of Vinanti Salgaonkar, a class 9 student, passed off peacefully, with no untoward incident being reported from any part of the city.

The protesters went ahead with the bandh plan despite pleas against it by Anand Asnotikar, Minister for Fisheries, Science and Technology.

Vinanti's parents and some organisations have been seeking a fresh inquiry into the reasons for her death. They stated that it was a case of murder. However, the police claim that Vinanti set herself ablaze.

Vinanti was found with burns in her in home about three months ago. After battling for life for a few days in a hospital in Goa, she succumbed to burns. Following investigations, the police said that it appeared to be a case of suicide. But, they are still waiting for the report from the forensic laboratory from Hyderabad to reach a conclusion.

But the relatives and local people gave a bandh call ignoring the request of the Superintendent of Police to wait till two more reports from the forensic laboratory were received.

Shops and business establishments remained closed and autorickshaws were off the road. Banks and government offices functioned as usual while KSRTC buses plied as usual. Tight security was made in sensitive areas of Karwar.

A procession was taken out and a memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner. The protesters accused the police of deliberately trying to protect those behind the girl's murder.

The protesters warned that they would intensify their agitation if the accused in the case were not arrested at the earliest.

Superintendent of Police K. T. Balakrishna said the death of Vinanti had taken place in a hospital in Goa and hospitals in that State refer cases to central forensic laboratory in Hyderabad. The laboratory in Hyderabad would get many cases every day and they were analysed on the basis of seniority, Mr. Balakrishna said.

He said the police had received one report and were awaiting two more. Since the report had technical terms, it had been sent to a professor of a medical college for interpretation, he said.

Udupi, Jun 9: Karnataka Minister for Primary and Secondary School S Suresh Kumar on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of either postponing or cancelling SSLC exam in the State and it will start from June 25 as scheduled.

Replying to a question, the Minister said that Telangana and Tamil Nadu States might have cancelled the SSLC exam, but Karnataka will not follow them. "Will hold the examination from June 25 to July 4 by taking all care to protect the interests of the Children.

The SSLC exam was originally scheduled for March 27, but was postponed as lockdown was clamped following the spread of killer Coronavirus.

Bengaluru, July 13: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday made it clear that the government had no plans to extend the lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts beyond July 22.  The two districts will enter a lockdown starting 8 pm on July 14. 

“There is no proposal before the government to extend the lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts. The chief minister requests citizens not to panic and cooperate with the government without paying heed to rumours,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said. 

“The lockdown is being imposed to control the rising number of Covid-19 cases in these districts. The CM has instructed officials to make all arrangements in a week’s time and make ready whatever is necessary,” the CMO said. 

The clarification came after Yediyurappa chaired a meeting of the Covid-19 task force meeting. Yediyurappa also held a video conference with officials from all districts to review the Covid-19 situation, rainfall and irrigation measures. 

Two more districts - Dakshina Kannada and Dharwad - have decided to impose a lockdown to control the spread of Covid-19 following Yediyurappa’s video conference. Starting July 15, Dakshina Kannada will be under a lockdown for a week whereas it will be a 9-day lockdown in Dharwad. 

During his video conference, Yediyurappa noted that the number of cases was on the rise in Bengaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Ballari, Udupi and Kalaburagi. 

He further noted that Covid-19 fatalities were going up in Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag and Mysuru. He asked authorities to bring this under control. “Bidar is among five districts nationally when it comes to deaths. This has to be controlled,” Yediyurappa said, seeking a report by experts on this. 

Yediyurappa told authorities to prioritize rapid antigen tests. “One lakh test kits have been procured. Use them wisely in emergency cases,” the CM said. He ordered that those aged above 60 years, those with serious illnesses and showing symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) have to be identified and subjected to Covid-19 tests.

Madikeri, Aug 7: Two days after massive landslides triggered by heavy downpour in Kodagu, five people including a priest are still missing. 

The landslide, which originating at Brahmagiri Hills in Talacauvery, swept away two houses on Wednesday night.

This missing people are: Talacauvery temple chief Narayana Achar (70), his wife Shantha (70), brother Ananda Theertha Swami (87) and two assistants — Ravi Kiran (26) and Srinivas (30). Achar’s neighbour had shifted out of Bhagamandala earlier, fearing a landslide. 

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had to stop rescue operations due to bad weather. The operations resumed today. 

“There are many minor landslides on the way to the spot,” said Kodagu Deputy Commissioner C Annies K Joy, adding that the flood situation at Bhagamandala was not permitting earthmovers to reach the spot. Heavy rain between Wednesday and Thursday triggered landslides. 

Bhagamandala Panchayat Development Officer Ashok said a notice was issued to the priest’s family to shift out of the house, but they chose to stay back. 

On Thursday morning, when the Talacauvery temple staff went to check on Narayana Achar, as he had not reached the temple for the daily puja, they found levelled land and debris where Achar’s house stood. Utensils, puja material and clothes were found nearly 2 km away at Cherangala. 

As rains continued over the last few days, many rivers are flowing above the danger levels, forcing people to move to safer places.

 Responding to the situation, which is turning grimmer by the day, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital after testing positive for Covid-19, directed ministers to visit rain-hit areas and supervise relief efforts. He has also assured of providing required financial assistance for those affected.
