'Byari' wins bronze medal at SAARC Film Awards in Colombo

Colombo, May, 22: Indian film Byari bagged the bronze medal in the feature film category at the 2012 SAARC Film Awards while Saving Face, the acclaimed Pakistani movie on victims of acid attacks, has won the best documentary prize.

Byari is the only Indian movie to win accolades at the coveted event. It is the first ever movie to be made in the Byari language. The movie, directed by K P Suveeran and produced by Althaf Hussain, had earlier been adjudged India's Best Film for 2011 along with Marathi film Devool



Saving Face, co-directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, won an Oscar earlier this year. The film chronicles the work of a British-Pakistani plastic surgeon who rebuilds the faces of women disfigured by acid attacks. Pakistani director Mehreen Jabbar's Ramchand Pakistani bagged the silver medal in the feature film category.

During the SAARC Film Awards ceremony held in Colombo last night, Pakistan bagged its first award for Saving Face.

The award for best actor was shared by Pakistani actors Manzar Sehbai and Rashid Farooqi for their roles in the feature films Bol and Ramchand Pakistani, respectively.

The best feature film trophy was awarded to Sri Lanka's Akasa Kusum directed by Prasanna Vithanage. The film depicts the golden age of cinema as seen through the memories of an ageing actress.

The runner-up award in the documentary category was bagged by Sri Lanka's The Great School Teacher directed by Mayri Wanaguru. The best actress award went to Sri Lanka's Malini Fonseka for her role in Akasa Kusum while Bangladesh's Morshedul Islam won the best director award for Khelaghar.

The SAARC Film Festival attracted nominations from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Well-known film directors from Singapore, Iran and Russia were adjudicators for the film awards. The competition this year was held for two categories feature and documentary films.

Directors of some of the nominated films from Bangladesh, India and the Maldives attended the festival, which included a workshop on "Film vs digital the impending extinction of the celluloid cinema and the challenges ahead.

Bengaluru, Mar 8: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has identified three more locations to open Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL) including in Mysuru, Hassan, and Shivamogga in Karnataka.

According to a statement issued here on Sunday, these laboratories will start functioning shortly in Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute, Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, and Shivamogga Institute of Medical Sciences. Besides, the ICMR has also identified sample collection centres in Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Science in Ballari and Kalaburgi Institute of Medical Sciences.

B G Prakash, State Joint Director (Communicable Diseases), said that the new Laboratories will help to ease the load on the two designated laboratories in Bengaluru. Currently, the virology laboratory in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and the NIV branch in Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases are doing COVID-19 tests in Karnataka.

Bengaluru, Jul 13: In an attempt to avoid the ugly scene of migrant workers walking to their native places due to the current week-long lockdown imposed in the state, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is running 1,600 additional buses on Monday and Tuesday to help them return safely.

The KSRTC has already run 249 additional buses from the State capital and has so far ferried 6,641 passengers and 231 buses have been booked.

The KSRTC appealed to the public not to panic as additional buses have been deployed. "After ensuring social distance and conducting thermal screening, passengers will be allowed to travel. It has already been planned to operate additional buses," the corporation stated in a press release here.

Yadgir, Feb 27: A four-year-old girl and her four-month-old sibling died after consuming pesticide mistaking it to juice at Kodal village in Vadagera taluk of Yadgir district on Wednesday.

After noticing her daughters lying lifeless, mother Shehnaz attempted suicide by consuming poison.

Khairunna (4) mistook pesticide for juice and consumed it while her mother was busy doing household chores. She also reportedly made her four-month-old sister drink. 

Upon seeing the siblings lying lifeless, Shehnaz, fearing her husband and mother-in-law, attempted suicide by consuming poison.

All three were rushed to Yadgir district hospital. The siblings died while their mother is battling for her life.
