Motorists flock to petrol pumps ahead of petrol price hike

Mangalore, May 23: Petrol station forecourts in Mangalore on Wednesday evening were suddenly inundated with motorists stockpiling fuel in the wake of Union Government increasing the petrol price by Rs 7.50 a litre with effect from midnight tonight.

Hundreds of vehicles were seen standing in long queues in front of almost all the petrol pumps across the city that resulted in traffic problem for commuters.

The steepest ever hike in petrol prices has agitated vehicle owners and led them to stand in queue in front of petrol pumps.

While some petrol pumps were crowded till night, owners of some other petrol stations took a decision to close down the pumps earlier and open it after the hike comes into effect.

Vasudeva Rao, a resident of Nandigudda, said, “Due to the looming hike by midnight I decided to fill my car's tank and save some money before petrol price increase.”

“The petrol prices are already at all times high and the government's move will once again affect our daily budget as it will put some extra burden on our pockets”, said a journalist who had to wait at least 15 minutes in front of a petrol station in Balmatta to get the fuel tank of his motorbike filled.

Udupi, Jan 25: The accused, who planted a crude bomb at the Mangalore International Airport on January 20, was brought to Udupi on Saturday, to collect information, as part of the spot investigation, police said here.

According to police officials, accused Aditya Rao was brought to Karnataka Bank Kadiyali branch, where Rao had a Safe Locker. The team opened the locker and seized the documents, along with a Box.

They said the seized documents, along with the Box, will be sent to the FSL for investigation.

Bengaluru, Mar 1: A Bengaluru Court has extended the judicial custody of Amulya Leona, who raised 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogan at an anti-CAA rally in Bengaluru's Freedom Park on Feb 20, till March 5.

Amulya was sent to 14-day judicial custody for her actions in the presence of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

A sedition case has been registered against Amulya.

According to the police, a suo moto case under Section 124A (sedition), 153A and B (promoting enmity between different groups and imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) have been registered against the girl.

Bengaluru, Mar 6: School children in Karnataka will have 'bag-free' days on two Saturdays in a month as part of efforts to create a joyful learning experience, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced on Thursday. By making two Saturdays in a month as bag-free days, "Sambhrama Shanivara" will be observed with the objective of creating a joyful learning experience by reducing the burden of text books, he said, presenting the 2020-21 budget in the state assembly.

"The main purpose of such days is to create awareness, by means of activities, on topics that are necessary for students to be ideal citizens," he added.

He also said for the first time in the history of the state his government presented a "child budget", making it a special feature of the budget.

All the policies and programmes for the development of children below the age of 18 are consolidated and presented in this budget and as many as 279 programmes involving Rs.36,340crore, which is 15.28 per cent of the total volume of the Budget, have been earmarked.

English medium of instruction would be given along with Urdu in 400 government Urdu schools and Rs one crore will be provided during 2020-21 for this purpose, Mr Yediyurappa said.

For the education of children of auto drivers, up to Rs 2,000 would be provided annually to each family. For this purpose, Rs 40 crore will be provided in the coming fiscal, the Chief Minister added.
