Fuel price hike sparks protests across twin districts; political parties slam UPA

Mangalore, May 24: The steepest ever hike in the price of petrol spread anger across the coastal Karnataka, with people venting ire at the Central Government through protests and demonstrations under the banner of various political organisations in cities like Mangalore and Udupi.

Political parties and organisations such as Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Democratic Youth Federation of India and Nagarika Samiti took out took out rallies in the headquarters of twin coastal districts shouting slogans against the UPA government and accusing it of being indifferent towards the people's problems.

The protesters urged the people to prepare for the nationwide bundh on May 31 to pressurise the Congress led government. The bundh call was given by both BJP led National Democratic Alliance and Left Parties.

The agitators singled out Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “failing to check fuel price rise despite being an economist”.

Poor and lower middle class families would have to bear the brunt of increase in prices of fuel, said Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel while addressing the protesters in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner, here on Thursday.

“In a welfare country like India, the UPA government betrayed the people by allowing fuel to be determined by the market. Although there was no change in crude oil price internationally, the government revised the price to benefit oil companies,” he said.

Mr Kateel said that his party would demand an immediate and complete rollback. “If there is no rollback, it will be the last chapter of your political history,” he warned.

Demanding the resignation of the PM, he said: “The government is neck-deep in corruption. Despite the PM being an economist, our economy has been ailing for long”, he added.

In Udupi, members of Zilla Nagarika Samiti staged a unique protest by pushing two-wheelers from Diana Circle and later carried the two-wheelers from Clock Tower accompanied by the music of traditional drummers.

Soon after the Centre announced the petrol price hike on Wednesday DFYI members in Mangalore had initiated the protest by taking out a rally from DC office to Rao and Rao Circle.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 31: The Kerala government

on Tuesday rejected concerns of community spread of novel coronavirus in the state in the wake of the second death of a patient here who had no travel history or reported contact with any infected person.

Setting aside the concern, Health Minister K K Shylaja said the deceased man, a native of nearby Pothancode, was already suffering from several other health issues including high blood pressure.

The 68-yearold man died at the government medical college here, taking the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Kerala to two, the government said.

"We have got information that the deceased man had come in contact with some persons arrived from the Gulf. As he was very sick and was not in a position to speak, we could not collect details from him directly," she told reporters here.

"So we had to collect such details from his relatives now. As per preliminary assessment, it was a case of contact spread. So, as of now, there is no need to get panic about the community spread," she said

The possibility of death was high among patients, aged above 60 years and suffering from other diseases like heart ailments or diabetics, she said.

"That's why we are giving strict directions to the elderly people to remain in homes and avoid contact with infected persons, " the minister said.

However, the minister directed those came in contact with the deceased person to remain in self-quarantine and inform the authorities if they developed any infection symptoms.

In both the coronavirus deaths in the state, the deceased persons were aged and were suffering from other diseases, she added.

Bengaluru, May 12: Karnataka sees the highest single day spike since the start of the pandemic in the state, higher than Sunday's spike in cases. 63 new cases have been reported in last 24 hours. 

With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases rises to 925, said the state health department's bulletin on Tuesday.

While 42 new positive cases reported from May 11, 5 pm to May 12, noon, another 21 fresh 21 cases reported by 5 pm on May 12.

To date, 921 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 31 deaths and 426 discharged," the bulletin read further.

New cases in Bengaluru Urban 3,  Yadgir 2, Bagalkote 15, Dakshina Kannada 2, Dharwad 9, Bidar 2, Hassan 5, Ballari, Mandya, Chikkaballapura, Kalaburagi (one each).

Cases in Gadag (3), Kolar (5), Bengaluru Urban (1) and Davangere (11) cases.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) on Thursday came up with a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for restaurants whereby among other physical distancing norms, it has suggested a 2-metre gap between tables.

Formulated in partnership with Releski, a Bengaluru based skill-tech company, the SoP suggests that in case of back-to-back seating, people sitting with their backs towards each other will have their seats divided by 'Plexiglass' divider raised up to 2 meters from the ground.

"In a typical restaurant, the improvised seating plan should have a minimum distance of 2 metres between tables. The distance of 2 metres (6 feet) between tables should measure from one edge of the table to the other table's edge," it said.

In case of loose or free seating such as in banquet style or food court style seating, a minimum 2 meters of distance should be maintained between tables.

The guidelines noted that, to encourage physical distancing, restaurants have to sacrifice their seating capacity, to promote health and safety, and also to gain trust from their patrons.

"In order to perform this, divide your restaurants under different sectors. Pull out your restaurant's floor plan and colour code different sections red and yellow. Red sections are potential areas where maximum footfall or traffic is observed. Yellow sections are areas where the footfalls are average," it said.

All the red sections are encircled or bordered by placing barricades or Q manager and will open at specific points to access the yellow section and all the opening points will have hand sanitisers and sprays, and every guest who walks from red zones to yellow zones will sanitise himself/herself to reduce the chances of contamination.

For air conditioning, the guidelines of CPWD shall be followed which inter alia emphasises that the temperature setting of all air conditioning devices should be in the range of 24-30 degree Celsius, relative humidity should be in the range of 40- 65 per cent, intake of fresh air should be as much as possible and cross ventilation should be adequate, the guidelines suggested.

The industry body has also suggested appointment of a COVID-free Ambassador who would operate as the Chief Health Officer within the restaurant team, preferably from the management team in each shift.

The ambassador's would put the new daily work routines into practice, to monitor compliance with good practice and to lead the preventative measures, adapt to health & safety recommendations and requirements of the restaurant and oversee the implementation of the norms.

Anurag Katriar, President of NRAI and CEO & Executive Director of deGustibus Hospitality, said: "Every restaurant cutting across formats is facing the harsh reality of subdued to shut business volumes in the present and the uncertainty of business environment in the future. One thing is certain that hygiene and safety will be a key differentiator in the post-pandemic restaurant operations."
