Mangalore, May 24: Social activist Vidya Dinakar and four others were arrested by the city police on Thursday after they took Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner N S Chanappa Gowda to task in front of his office for allegedly being indifferent towards the problems being faced by the residents of Melukoppalu and Athrebail areas near Kuloor.

The development comes amidst the intensified protests by the residents against the Mangalore Special Economic Zone's move to reclaim Phalguni river bank to lay corridor road.

Ms Dinakar was arrested around 5:00 pm along with activist Ashok Amin and three residents identified as Jacinta D'Souza, Latha D'Souza and Godfrey.

It is learnt that the five member delegation had visited office of DC to ask him why he failed to visit the river bank near Kuloor to listen to the problems of the residents as promised by him the previous day.

When the DC refused to meet the delegation and moved out of his chamber, Ms Dinakar and others tried to surround him. At this time a brawl broke out between Ms Vidya and a police constable who allegedly pushed her using his baton. Soon the five persons were arrested by the police and taken to the Pandeshwar police station.

Later, non-bailable cases under sections 143 and 149 (member of an unlawful assembly), 147 ( rioting), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code were booked against them.

Bengaluru, Feb 4: The CBI has booked Karnataka cadre senior IPS officers Hemant Nimbalkar and Ajay Hilori along with eight others in connection with Rs 4,000-crore I-Monetary Advisory (IMA) scam in which gullible investors were allegedly cheated in the name of Islamic banking, officials said on Tuesday.

The move came after the CBI received an approval from the Karnataka government to proceed with investigation into alleged role of 1998-batch IPS officer Nimbalkar and 2008-batch IPS officer Hilori, they said.

Along with the two officers, the agency has also named the company IMA, its founder Mansoor Khan and others in the case.

The CBI had approached the state government seeking permission to proceed against the two officers who are in senior positions in the Karnataka Police and allegedly helped IMA founder Masoor Khan, they said.

Kalaburagi, Feb 16: Fourteen years of life in jail has not deterred Subhash Patil from fulfilling his dream of becoming a doctor.

The 40-year-old man from Afzalpura in Karnataka's Kalaburagi was put behind bars in a murder case while doing MBBS in 1997.

Speaking to media, Patil said, "I joined MBBS in 1997. But, I was jailed in a murder case in 2002. I worked at the jail's OPD and was released in 2016 for good conduct. I completed my MBBS in 2019."

Earlier this month, Patil completed a one-year mandatory internship for getting the MBBS course degree.

Police arrested Patil in 2002 in a murder case when he was in his third year of MBBS course. A court sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2006.

He was put behind bars but he did not give up his childhood dream of becoming a doctor.

In 2016, police released Patil on Independence day for his good conduct.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: In order to bring uniform act for all universities in the state under the Karnataka University Act 2017, the state government formed a committee in this connection.

As per the instruction of deputy chief minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, higher education department has issued an order to form a committee under the chairmanship of R Vasudeva Athre.

The other members are former Bengaluru university Vice-Chancellor Prof B Thimmegoda, IIT Bengaluru director Prof Sadagopan, Srusti institute of arts and design technology Geetha Narayan Srusti, centre of educational and social studies president Dr M K Sridhat and state higher education parishad Executive Director Dr M S Kori, co-member of the committee.
