SSLC Kannada-medium topper honoured

Mangalore, May 25: Prajwal S. of Alva's Kannada-Medium High School, Moodbidri, who had topped in this year's SSLC examination in Kannada medium in the State, was felicitated at Patrika Bhawan here on Friday.

Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi and Sevanjali Trust felicitated him. He was presented with Rs. 10,000 cash in recognition of his achievement.

Samithi president G. Hanumantha Kamath, who took the initiative to felicitate the boy, said there was a need to recognise the achiever who hailed from a poor family in a rural area. Of the 625 marks, Prajwal had scored 613 marks by studying in Kannada medium, he said.

Pratjwal said that he would opt for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Electronics (PCME) combination in Alva's Pre-University College this year. “I want to be an engineer,” he said.

Mr. Prajwal said that he had scored 125 out of 125 marks in Kannada, 100 in Social Science, 98 in English, 97 each in Mathematics and Hindi and 96 marks in Science.

He said that he studied up to Class 8 in his village Andinje, near Venoor in Belthangady taluk. He joined the Alva's Kannada Medium High School for class 9 after writing an entrance test. He was adopted by Mr. Alva under the foundation's adoption scheme. He obtained free education, boarding, and lodging facilities under the scheme.

“I used to study from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. regularly,” he said.

Prajwal said that his father, Sridhara Poojary, owned a petty shop at Andinje and mother Sujatha was a homemaker who rolled beedis. He had two younger brothers studying in class 8 and 9.

Davanagere, May 3: Karnataka's Davanagere district on Sunday reported 21 COVID-19 positive cases, said Mahantesh Beelagi, Deputy Commissioner.

The number of COVID-19 patients has suddenly taken a giant leap in the district.

"We had sent 94 samples on May 1, on May 2 we sent 72 samples. Today we sent 164 samples for testing. In the last two days, 21 samples have tested positive for coronavirus, we are tracing to know how did all of them came in contact with COVID-19 infected person," said Mahantesh Beelagi.

"Our surveillance team and police team have started tracing the primary and secondary contacts of all 21 people," he added.
Davanagere is currently in the Green Zone.

Meanwhile, 13 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Karnataka till 5 pm on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 614, according to the State Health Department.

Bengaluru, Apr 26: A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Vijayapura district in Karnataka for posting the photograph of a COVID-19 girl patient as his whatsapp status photo with a derogatory message, police said.

Anil Rathod on Saturday posted the picture of the girl student as status message with a caption, "Bad News Student got Positive"

By putting her photograph as his whatsapp status message, he tried to create fear among the masses and intentionally defamed her by making her photo go viral, the the police said in a statement.

It is an offence to reveal the identity of the COVID-19 patients by taking the photograph and putting it in the public domain, the police said.

Rathod has been booked under for spreading rumours and causing panic, they said.

Bengaluru, May 12: About 101 labourers bound for Rajasthan from Bengaluru in a goods truck were detained near a border Checkpost at Hirebagewadi village in Belagavi taluk on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway and have been sent into institutional quarantine on Tuesday.

Police said that the Labourers comprising of men, women and children had been travelling towards Rajasthan in a goods truck without permission from Karnataka and even from their home State Rajasthan.

In the morning hours, police and other department personnel manning the check post near...check post near Hirebagewadi detained them.
